View Full Version : Jerkey Playaback for Xvid rips

Usually I'm ripping with Gknot and divx 3.11 ... but since Xvid is getting more and more appreciation I decided to give it a try ... and it didn't disappoint me ... :) ... I must say that the quality is very impressive ... OK ... so you must say now ... what is the problem then ... but first let me tell you about my PC ...
P3 1 GHz
256 MB RAM
NVidia Riva TNT2 Model 64
Creative SB Live
Xvid Codec : Koepi latest 22-5-2002
and for the operating system I have both windows ME and windows 2000 sever on the same machine ...
now ... when I played the ripped movie I did with Xvid in windows ME ... (I followed doom9 guide for 2 CD rip) ... there is no problem ... and the movie plays smoothly ... but ... when I'm trying to play it with windows 2000 ... it is not palying at all ... actually it is playing ... but you'll only see a black picture ... maybe you can be lucky and see a picture or something in a while :D ... I read in another thread that this can be solved by reducing the hardware acceleration ... I did it ... OK ... now I can see the movie ... but it is jercky playback now ... I can open the movie using virtualdub ... and paly it there smoothly ... with no problem at all ... I tried to change it's FourCC code also ... but with no luck also ... I can play downloaded Xvid clips from the net smoothly ... with no problem at all in both windows ME and windows 2000 ... so my guess is that there is an option in Xvid coded configuration that I have to change in order to be able to play the movie smoothly in both windows ME and windows 2000 ... I hope that someone could help ...

Why all the ...? Your post would be a lot easier to read if it were written normally.
I take it you've tried lowering the amount of postprocessing? You should be able to do full postprocessing on a P3 1GHz anyway.
You could try using ffdshow to play back instead of the XviD filter. That _might_ help, though I suspect the problem is deeper into Windows than that.
If you use Media Player 6.4, try looking to see what the Video Renderer properties are. You may need to ensure the DirectDraw options are turned on or off (as suits your machine).
That's the best I can come up with atm; except that I run XviD with Win2k and haven't seen that problem before.
Good luck,

If you're trying to play directly from the CD, try copying to the HD first. This may not actually help, but doesn't hurt to try.

i had this problems too with my radeon7000 card. i tried many things and finally i installed a newer driver version. all problems were gone away. picture quality was better and playback was smoothy. i think i had problems with the hardware overlay. maybe you can try to disable the hardware overlay in BSPlayer (i use it - it's my favourite). it helped to watch the movies very well too, without a newer driver.

yeah some old ati radeon drivers have issues . ex. the radeon driver that comes with windows xp makes the cpu usage jump to 100% every time you scroll :P

@sffubs ... what's wrong with the "..." actually I found them very useful ... and I think it is just a matter of taste ...
anyhow ... I tried ffdshow with no luck ... remember the problem is with windows 2000 not with the PC ... I have both windows ME and windows 2000 on the same PC ... but the problem is only with windows 2000 ... the strange thing is that the clip that I got from the internet is played without any problem in both Operating Systems ... but the movie that I have ripped can only be played without any problems in windows ME ...
@gldblade ... I'm playing everything directly from the hard disk ...
@scorchED, buba king ... I'll try to update the driver while I'm suspecting that the problem is here ...
I found something that might be interesting ... I told you before guys that I can't see the movie when I try to play it in windows 2000 ... or I can see it but very slowly ... well ... I'm using WMP 6.4 ... by accident I moved the player window ... and suddenly I found that the picture is running ... I kepy moving the player window around ... and the movie is playing ... when I stop moving the window ... the movie stops ... I hope that would help ... and thanks all for your responces ... :)

To me it sounds like the resolution maybe not devideble by 32 or 16
and that is not a problem in the video drivers in win me but the drivers you got for your win2k have an issue so what you could do is try to encode the movie in a resolution that is devideble by 32 or you could install g400divx and see if it helps.

Kandor ... Thanks man ... your advice worked great for me :) ... the movie is playing smoothly now in windows 2000 ... and I can see that you've adviced someone before to do the same thing ... ;)
I guess that the problem was in the cropping ... the movie resolution is 640 X 320 ... or it can be my NVidia graphic card ...
Long time ago ... I adviced someone to use DivX AntiFreeze from PRR video utilities ... and he thanked me not only for the AntiFreeze but also for DivXG400 ... which solved the playback problems for his Matrox card ... I didn't know that it can also be helpful for NVidia cards ... :)
this sounds like an overlay issue, and yes, nvidia's drivers sucks!

Do they? I was under the impression that nVIDIA's drivers were pretty good. Is that just a 2D overlay problem, or in general?
Maybe that's the source of minor jerkiness in my Win2k playback.

Nvidia's drivers are just about as good as say...Creative:devil:
Maybe not quite that bad but that should give you a general idea.

Great... I have both :-(
However, I don't seem to have any problems with stability. Oh well, whilst we are on the subject of drivers, any recommendations for graphics cards/drivers? It's always good to know how products actually perform.

woops, way off topic there... is it a fresh install of windows2000 that you get jerky playback with?

well ... it wasn't a fresh installation for windows 2000 ... but I don't think that was the problem ... the problem lies on the NVidia drivers ... and it is solved when I installed DivXG400 ...
