First you have to run either windows nt, win2k, or winxp and when installing you have the option to format the drive to ntfs or fat(except nt)..choose ntfs. If you already have win2k or xp installed you might ck out a program called partition magic. I am not 100% but i think it will allow you to change from fat to ntfs without losing your data.

Go to a command prompt and type:
convert <drive> /FS:NTFS
where <drive> is the partition you want to convert.

You can convert a FAT volume to NTFS on NT, 2000, and XP by typing the following at the command prompt...
CONVERT volume /FS:NTFS
...where "volume" is the volume you want to convert (ie. C:). Your data will be unaffected.

Just keep in mind the conversion is irreversible. Once the volume is NTFS, there's no going back. Not that it's a big deal in my opinion. I haven't run any form of FAT in years. You'll find NTFS is much more flexible and reliable.
