Does DivX5 have serious audio sync & seek issues with >2GB AVIs with AC3 sound?

I made a backup of my "Das Boot" DVD. The movie is 3 hour 28 min long and it takes a lot of space if I do proper hi-quality backup with AC3 sound. My AVI takes more than 2300MB of disk space.

Here's an interesting thing that happens with sound. When I make 2300MB AVI the sound starts playing normally when I watch the movie, but as soon as I rewind or jump to any place in a movie - the sound is shifted. Looks like the sound track starts somewhere after those first 300 megs of the movie (infamous 2GB AVI limit methinks)

However, when I lower the resulution and bitrate and make a 2020MB AVI (i.e. under 2GB limit) the sound is 100% normal always, never any desync or seek problems.

This happens with DivX 5.0.2 in any player. Well, actually, players' reaction is a bit different. Where PowerDivX just remains silent during the first 300 megs, Win Media Player complains that "File format is invalid" and dies. It doesn't complain if I seek after 300 megs, but it does when I seek to the place where there is no sound due to this shift, i.e. first 300 megs.

What do ya ppl think? Has anyone ever heard about that? I believe I'm the only one here with a DVD recorder, so noone ever does crazy 2-3 gig backups with hq pic and AC3 sound, but anyway... help pls ;-)

P.S. note that if I just start movie and watch it from start to the end, there's no problem. This shift happens [...err.. ahem.. ;-)] only when I start seeking in a movie, trying to jump to a particular interesting moment in a movie.

2GB is a filesize limit for some older type of avi files. I also have the problem sometimes that captured files >2GB which I copy to another file with direct stream copy are then not functioning properly anymore. You can play them back and convert them further, but when you try to scroll in the file, media player says something like "file corrupt" blabla...

Before copying via direct stream copy the files work perfectly normal. It seems they have a different kind of avi format before the direct stream copy process.

This doesn't really help you, but it gives you an idea what to do about it, maybe?

That's an interesting point, theReal. Say, do you know any other way to mux AC3 audio stream and DivX 5 video stream besides Vdub and Nandub? They both produce the same broken AVI so I wonder if there are other tools which can mux into AVI. I may try them and see if this helps.

Graphedit plus AVI muxer is one way. Anything else?

P.S. see my latest post in Vdub forum - it seems that Vdub codebase is quite broken for I found another strange bug in it (and in Nandub too of course, they all include the same code). It says thay AVI extended indices are exceeded when I try to write >2GB file. Vdub 1.4.10 of course.

Click Code & Programs, then click Direct Show filters for converting MPEG2 files into AVI files.
This is how to mux into avi: draw the graph with two file sources, avi and ac3 and in the end there will be I-Media AVI Renderer (see screenshots in the readme)

ianinmalaga, you have no idea what we're dealing with here. We're discussing MUXING of AVI files larger than 2GB, and you're giving us some old PLAYBACK (not muxing!) graph everybody knows about. Thanks, but this graph definitely won't help in this case.

Nice, very nice, but this user asked about muxing AC3 and video into AVI. I asked about that too. You suggested some playback graph which has nothing to do with muxing. So what's the point? Especially after I've answered his question already, by giving him URL with the "muxing AVI in graphedit" guide.
