Hi:

I have a dvd that plays a title set of movie promos and then goes to the main menu......

My GOAL is to make an identical DVD-R by just shrinking the main movie nothing else...no stripping etc.
I recompressed the main movie alone ...no stripping. And then replaced the 7 title set VOB with the new smaller 4 VOB. The movie will play fine if I only keep the movie ifo & VOB in the same dir ...no Video VOB or ifo.

When testing playback ...after the advertisement title set finishes ....I get an Illegal Nav error ...and the Main Menu does not come up.

Don't know where to look to solve this...
I ONLY shunk the main movie I did NOT touch the Menu VOB's or ifo's.

You should check Jdobbs' IFOUpdate utility. I've had good success with it when doing what you're attempting.

By the way, if you're wanting to know more specifically what controls the navigation from the first play, open the VIDEO_TS.IFO, go to the VMGM_MAT section, then the First Play PGC listed there. You'll find the nav commands listed as "Pre Command" at the bottom. It's probably set to jump to the wrong PGC.

I have discovered that the new movie ifo after the remux has no reference to the menu VOB ...it acts as though I am making a DVD-R for the movie alone.

This is wehre the nav errors are coming from.

If I take the original movie ifo from the DVD ....I get back the menus etc....and all is well EXCEPT.......
The chapter selcetionpoints get screwed ...naturally...esp since the movie ifo has a layer break point in the chapter listings and the new VOB's have no such requirement being less than 4Gig.

How come ifoedit kills the references to the Menu in the movie ifo file....? Is there some setting I am missing?

Like I said, check out IFOUpdate. It resets all of the pointers so that the chapter selection still works like it should. It's a simple but VERY useful utility! Do a search and you'll find it. It will most likely resolve the rest of your problem.

To quote Jdobbs on the use...

"Attached. It's not pretty but it works. I have no pride. The zip file contains an executable, an INI file, and the VB source code. To run it you'll need the VB runtime installed. No usage rules -- keep it, change it, or throw it away -- I don't care, just never blame me for anything. I don't advocate stealing other people's intellectual property, so remember it wasn't posted for that purpose -- I just like to see how these things work.

Have I said enough?

Steps to use:

1. Rip to disk and reencode with CCE.
2. Reauthor the main movie. I use SpruceUp and match chapters.
3. Save the original VTS_0X_X.VOB files somewhere.
4. Copy the newly created VOB files (except VTS_01_0.VOB)
5. Type in the path to the newly created IFO.
6. Type in the path to the IFO to be modified.
7. Type in a path to where you want the original saved.
8. Push the button.
9. Go into IFOEdit and look at the modified file.
10. Do Get VTS Sectors.
11. Burn to DVD-R.

The paths are saved in the INI so you don't have to keep retyping.

If you find error and fix it, I'd appreciate you post a copy of the fix.

I always export in DVD Maestro format using Chapter Xtractor. Works like a charm! The format may be valid with Spruce as well.
