IFOEdit sometimes creates choppy playback when remuxing video streams

First of all, thanks for the great tool Derrow! Without IFOEdit, none of this would even be possible in the first place...

OK, back to the bug. This has been around for quite a while, but I finally just got aggrivated enough by it to post here.

Here is a collection of past posts describing the problem:

Here is a quick summary of what happens:
Use ReMPEG to transcode a videostream
Verify that it resulting m2v plays correctly with PowerDVD
Remux w/IFOEdit
About 10% of the time, the movie will now have quick pauses inserted into the playback

Additionaly, as reported by Mosaic, "some movies DONT remux properly with ifoedit or vobedit. Try this to see...use VOBEDIT to DEMUX a VOB from your VTS ... then use it to REMUX the m2v u got...guess what ...playback of that VOB results in frame pauses at EXACTLY the same points every time. REMPEG was never used."

Hi All,

I've also had a similar apparently random problem remuxing Abyss: SE R2, .m2v plays fine in powerdvd, but the vobs are stuttery or dont play after about 3 seconds in the ifoedit dvd preview. I dont know if this is maybe related to the seamless branching used in the disc, but the vobs play fine before remuxing.

Yes, this is definitely a bug. I have the same problems. Always after entering new chapters the video stream stutters for a few milliseconds.

Further to my post above, I tried playing the vobs created by ifo edit in media player (which I believe is set up to use a different MPEG2 decoder than powerdvd) which seemed to play back fine?!?!? Also, I used spruceup to create vobs from the .ac3 and .m2v files, and got stuttery playback as well. Could this possibly be some issue with the output from tmpgenc?

I use rempeg and the m2v file plays without any problems. I tried re-muxing by rempeg, that works fine. I tried re-muxing by IfoEdit and the Vobs stutters at the beginning of each chapter. Definitely a problem with IfoEdit!

I did the same experiment as DJans with "Orange County" and it worked fine. I wonder if the older versions of ifoedit did this. I don't recall it doing it from the times I used it. Where can we get older versions of ifoedit? I also need it because of the Create TmpgTemplate bug... Please give me a link to a download site, or email me the older version (v0.89 preferably)

sorry for the late reply (heh, only over a month later...)

Previous versions of IFOEdit had the same problem. It's always been around, but for some reason only affects certain movies. But I never kept track of which movies did and which movies didn't.

Given the recent advances in the CCE method, I rarely use REMPEG, but it would still be nice to have that option.

Scratch that...when it comes to reencoding the extras in a film, it's really not worth the time to use the CCE method. Plus this type of material is usually interlaced and set in a very complex structure, making it a real pain to use CCE. Quality dosen't matter here very much, so REMPEG is perfect! For this reason alone, I would *very* much like to see this bug fixed!

BTW, this was mentioned in one of the earlier threads, but it won't hurt to say it again...if you go through the trouble of transcoding your movie with REMPEG and the output studders after remuxing, you can still use the REMPEG transcoded video. Just author it in Spruce/Maestro/Scenarist. You can then burn that output directly or follow the IFOEdit/CCE method to get it back into the original DVD. I've done this a few times myself, and can say that it work just fine.

I too tried using spruce after having problems with IFOEDIT after choppy remuxing from TMPGENC output:

However, I havent tried spruce / rempeg combo so perhaps that would work better :)

just a tip ..... if you burn a project with Spruce and it goes all wrong {ie: jumpy playback and sound pausing} just re-burn the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders that spruce makes (they will be in the >:\SpruceUpWorking folder), use either Nero or Primo and you should find they work %100! It also helps to keep your drives well defraged!

p.s Also I found that Spruce dosen't close down properly after exiting which can cause probs del'ing files and such so just ctr+alt+del > processes and hunt down Spruce and End it's process.

Hi Zaa,

I always use Nero to burn anyway, I tell Spruce to make a big VIDEO_TS directory for me, rather than write straight to A04. I've still got choppy output from Spruce when remuxing Abyss (see earlier post).

One thing I have noticed, at least with TMPGEnc reencoded material is that choppy playback seems to occur with video that is particularly low bitrate (say less than 3000 average kbits per second). Any comments?
