When using multipass encoding, referring to the 'Getting The Best Out Of CCE', the first pass (One Pass VBR) has the setting Q in the options which relates to the quality of the output. But does making the quality better that way make a difference after the 2nd or 3rd pass has gone through on the multipass option when average bitrate is selected.

I read in the CCE manual that for good quality a Q factor of 40-60 (I think) is appropriate. Less than 40 increases the overall quality add file size. I usually set mine to 30, for the following reason:

Also in the CCE manual, it mentions that multipass works best when the avg bitrate is within about 2000kbps of the original VAF. With me so far?

So, for example, if you are trying to reencode a large movie to fit onto a DVD5, you want the first pass to be as close to the final average as possible. BUT -- since you can't actually feed one pass VBR the average bitrate, you have to guess. I use a Q setting of 30 with pretty good results.
