How to recompress from mpg to divx5?

Ok, here's the deal..
I have this Mpeg-Video File of about 460 MB (let's call it Enterprise). The quality is so-so and I would like to make it smaller in DivX-Format.
Now VirtualDub says the average bitrate is 1260 kb/s. I have tried 2-pass fast re-encode with DivX 5 down to 600 kb/s with
GMC
B-Frames
Strong Psycho
keyframes every 300 frames

My DivX-avi always ends up being around 560 MB in size... this is driving me crazy... what am I doing wrong?

did you forget to compress the audio?

or he made min quantizer = max quantizer
Recommended quantizer settings:
Min = 2
Max = 8

Well... I set direct stream copy for the audio from the orginal and max quantizer is set to 12. 8 should make the file even bigger, right?
I'm lost...

I noticed that also with very small MPG clips (10 MB or less) I've converted to DivX3.11a. i.e. the size is no better or is larger. Never really tried to fix tho.

Right, I've got the solution now... It's actually not in the video but, as was pointed out, in the audio.
To be VCD-compliant it was PCM uncompressed, so recompressing it to MP3 saved all my problems... geez, I'm getting old :-)

It does, but when you leave VDub at avi audio it converts it in a PCM Wave file. To get the MPEG audio you have to do it with Graphedit and choose the Dump filter.
