I searched and searched but i couldnt find any thing that realy explained my problem completely so here i go , i also don't know if this is the right place to post;).

i just had my fujitsu hard drive replaced with a seagate both were 40gb and 7200rpm. i installed all my codecs , smr patch etc. i thought i would go all out and install the new divx 5 (not pro) . i first instaled the smr patch , then installed Gknot with both updates and then installed divx 5.Well now when i play back any movies produced with divx 4.11(gnot 0.23) the play back is very poor!!! with moving walls and faces that throb! which were not there before , or were not as bad! I also just encoded "kiss of the dragon" PAL interlaced (didnt DEinterlace as preview was fine) 16:9 ( 1:1.85) and the play back is the worst EVER!!! i used the latest version on Gnot with divx 5 ( newest 5.02?) Video format is: 704 x 288, 24 Bits, 141376 Frames, 25.000 Frames/Sec, 126 KB/Sec. bitrate : 935

Please help!

Below are some of the sceens that were mildly bad i didnt have time to seach the movie for the worst bits!

Well, your screenshots look very good to me!
If you find, that the quality is worse than before, may be you had before a higher post processing level, and now MIN or something.

About moving walls: they move even when you encode with quality based 100%! with a higher post processing level, they don't move anymore.

About SMR patch: why have you installed this? I never used such a thing, for what should it be good?!

And your format is false, 704x288 is 2,44 not 2,35 so 704x304 would be better (closer to 2,35:1, well it is always better to make the movie a little bit larger than thinner ;)). Don't trust the GKnot values anyway on that matter, GKnot sucks in that way, it makes me mad all the time. Always use your own brain to make aspect ratio calculations: there is no 100 thousand aspect ratios, there is only: 4:3, 16:9 & 2,35:1, all others values that GKnot may put out are bullshit.

hi cypher - i think frames look ok ... if post processing does not work, are you sure it's a codec problem ? what player are u using, have u tried another ? have u tried playback with divx 4 or 3.11 codecs ?

bobotns: About SMR patch: why have you installed this? I never used such a thing, for what should it be good?!

not much considering some movies i have watched from them, ... if that's the smr u mean:devil:.

GK has always given me correct resizing and that appears to be a valid aspect ratio ... if u don't trust the calcuations then use ur eyes and find a round object in a movie ( clock, car wheels etc. ) and check that its is actually round.

bobotns: there is no 100 thousand aspect ratios, there is only: 4:3, 16:9 & 2,35:1, all others values that GKnot may put out are bullshit.

hmmm ... despite that i seem to get perfect resizing everytime.

Thanks for the replys guys! i may have to watch my aspec ratios in the future! i only installed the SMR patch so i could watch spider man tele sync , i dont use this for encoding but i thought it might be relevent for playback. i figured out what was wrong! some how my display switched back to 16 bit high colour instead of the 32 bit true colour , have you ever tried watching a movie like that??? i guess thats why the captures look ok to me as well now ;) LOL well thanx again for the advice and help. Boy do i feel foolish!:o

btw, if you see a difference in playback quality when switching between 16/32 bit desktop the video overlay of your gfx card is not working.

Hi-

all others values that GKnot may put out are bullshit.

I'd be careful about accusing GKnot if I were you, bobotns. If he used Smart Crop All, and cut a few pixels from the top and bottom, he could very well wind up with 2.44:1 and good AR (which is why I don't use Smart Crop All, but Smart Crop Left-Right. Smart Crop All makes them too skinny). Heck, if I cut enough from the top and bottom, I could make a 5:1 movie with perfect AR. GKnot doesn't make mistakes of that kind.

And as we all know, there are only 2 DVD ARs, 4:3 and 16:9. The movie AR can be anything you choose to make it (and the clocks will still be round). As usual, diji1's right.
