SP v/s LP recording speed with my Sony TRV-17

What's the difference? I tried searching but the minimum word length is 3 characters so no go. Is there any quality loss (more compression)??? I figure why the hell not use 90 minutes on a DV tape instead of 60 minutes???

Well, if anyone is interested I finally got my answer. The track width on the tape is smaller for LP recording. From what I read this is only a problem if you try to play that tape on a different deck (camera). I found all kinds of good DV info here...

On my camcorder the difference is whether you'll be able to use a second audio track for cutting or not. As I always cut on my PC I never use single play on the camcorder. There's no video or audio quality difference.

Isn't there a sacrifice to quality on VHS if you record at LP (Long Play)?

Yes, of course, because VHS is analogue. VHS LP quality is worse than SP, but this is not true for DV, because as long as the signal quality is good enough so that you can properly distinguish between 0 and 1 digital quality will remain the same. Thus DV LP and DV SP result in exactly the same quality.

This whole discussion reminds me of something I read on the box of some brand of DVD-R (or was it +R... I wonder..) at Circuit City this morning. The box read '120 minutes or 240 in EP mode'.
I saw this and my first reaction was 'EP'?? Why the heck are they using analog recording terms for DVD-Rs?? But then I realized, they probably are using 'EP' as a rough analogy from EP analog recording to half D1 video on DVD. I guess that makes sense, since 352x480 is half the res, would require half the bitrate, and is half the spatial quality, although it certainly caught me offguard.

The naming of the different recording modes of DVD recorders drives me crazy, too. The marketing people obviously needed something the average stupid user can understand, so they took over terms from the old fashioned analogue recording equipment instead of talking about resolution and bitrate, or creating new terms.
