View Full Version : Normalizing a set of AC3s

Hi,

-------------------------------------------------------------------
my task is:

normalizing a set of (say 3) AC3s using a GLOBAL maxgain (the maximum of the 3 different maxgains) and converting them to 3 single MP2s.

my "workaround" so far:

doing a "dummy conversion" using BeSweet (-ota (g max)) and a list of the 3 given AC3s -> gives the global maxgain (I read it from the BeSweet screen output)

converting each AC3 to MP2 separately (batch file) using BeSweet and that value for maxgain I got before
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Does anybody know a better way? My method works, but it's a bit involved...

Cheers

Bernd

of course the global maxgain is the MINIMUM of the different single maxgains, not the maximum...

idea :
create a listfile of the 3, and encode using -ota( -g max ).
this will create ONE big mp2 normalized to the global gain.
then, use BeSplit (http://besplit.doom9.org) to quickly split to 3 tracks.

Hi DSPGuru,

thanks for your idea. But I think I have to spend some thoughts on the different delays the AC3 tracks have and how to stay synched with video after having splitted the big MP2 (and how to get the correct split positions)...

The big advantage of your method is that it's not necessary to do the conversion twice (1. dummy conversion, 2. final conversion).

I will give it a try.

Thx and bye

one thing for sure :
if you're going to two pass, your first pass shouldn't include encoding to mp2, just use "-2ch" for a stereo wav output.
the maxgain value is the same ;)

My 1st pass doesn't include mp2 conversion and uses 'nul' as output. But it's still taking enough time, too much for waiting and too little for going to bed...

The problem is not so much the conversion time but the need for user interaction. Pass 1 and 2 can't be automated.

OK, I know DVD2SVCD, but I don't like it for some reasons not to discuss here.

Maybe one sunny day BeSweet can convert lists alternatively to one single output file or to different files for each list item, and -ota (-g max)works on the whole list as it does now... ;)

i second that!!!
that would be good if you want to switch languages during a movie and not adjust the volume. (i sometimes reverse a bit if i didnt understand something)
