Hello,
I guess I could use some form of guidance here. I have a lot of VOBs saved form different movies (300mb-700mb each). I would like to make an easy DVD with just a simple menu (background picture and a preview of the chapter) and be able to choose from maybe 5-10 chapters. (each chapter = one VOB).
Before I try to burn them, should I do something with them? They seem to have their original "playing time stamp" in them. Can I somehow strip the "info" and "rebuild" them? Maybe I should convert them to something else and choose another way? As I'm new to this, burning finished VOB seemed like a good idea but I'm not sure anymore.
Anyone have any suggestions how to continue this little project? I would really appreciate it.
I know that Roxio Videopack works with VOB. Any more programs that handle VOBs? (if that’s the way to go).
Thanks.
First, if you want menus and chapter points, you need to have a dvd authoring software. There are lots of them that you will find in this forum. I'm using DVDit but there are better ones at higher cost. Only few of these programs will be able to open VOB files directy so you need to demux them first into an m2v files using TMPGenc or CCE or other similar programs before you can authored them. Now, if you just want the movie without menus and chapter points, then go to this site

Follow the instruction on how to create new ifo files from a set of VOB files. This step doesn't require authoring. It just creates the IFO files in order to play your movies. Good luck.

Heh, what you're trying to do actually isn't that easy...the big problem is that most (maybe all) DVD authoring programs don't accept VOBs as input. If you want to create a DVD with say 4 different short movies, a menu linking to each of them, and another menu with chapter points for each movie (which is what it seems to me you are trying to do), then the first thing you need to do is get your hands on an authoring program. I would recommend SpruceUp or something else simple.
The next thing you need to do is convert your VOBs into mpeg2 video (ie m2v file). If you lost your ifo files, then it gets kinda tricky. You can try a command line tool like bbdmux (part of bbtools) to get the audio and video out (you might have to use filemerger to join the VOBs first?). Damn, I really think that there's a better way to do this, but I can't think of it right now...anyone have any ideas?
However it's much easier if you still have your ifo files. Then you can use smart ripper's stream processing to demux your audio and video to seperate files.
Anyway, Once you've got your audio and video out, you can import them into your authoring software. If you use SpruceUp, make sure that your AC3 audio has the same name as the video (except with a .AC3 extension instead of .m2v) and is in the same directory when you import it. Otherwise you won't get any sound.
Like I said, there's probably an easier way, but this is all I could come up with at the moment...good luck!

Thanks guys,
I will try that out.
My project is like having a Superman flying scene, Matrix Kung-fu training, Bruce Lee scene etc and:
either:
Make one large VOB and put in chapters for each scene or
I try to make a more "real" DVD with menu options for each (VOB)scene.
I will sit down and see what my needs are and come back.
Programs no problem. Just need to see which options I have.
I'll be back.
