encoding at how many fps for different cpus.

Im planning on buying a laptop soon and am wondering what the video encoding speeds on different processors are. Is a 1.0ghz duron better that a 1.0ghz celeron when encoding divx? and do video cards affect (increase or decrease) the encoding speed or is video encding soley based on cpu power.

my change in vid card hasnt increased encoding performance.
Personal preference would suggest the Duron, mainly because AMD go for more work per Mhz, while Intel go for more Mhz, hence the PR System by AMD. Encoding performance may also be affected by cache, but i am not sure about this. My Tbird 900 runs at 7-8fps on a DVD encode at 640x320 res using DivX5.

videocard does not have an influence. cpu power, mmx, sse and the likes do.

yes a laptop. I already have a desktop and i need a laptop bc ill be travelling around the whole year so i wont be home for months. I guess duron seems to be the choice at hand. how many fps would you get with a duron at 640 and divx5 (not the pro).

my xp1600+ manages
11 fps for first pass
21 fps for second pass
using divx v5 with all options on and highest quality, full size
but as i just use it overnight that seems fine to me.

I'm not sure about this, so don't quote me, but I'm fairly sure I saw a column somewhere, while I was surfing, that said AMD are releasing (if not already released) a ~MOBILE~ Athlon 1500 or 1800.

Worth looking into before you splash the cash.

D770, encoding at 640x272 from a 704x352 cropped source on divx5, 13 fps on both passes (I never use mv files), 14 fps on xvid.

@edit: the point is that I never use resolutions as high as 640x***, but 480->576 instead. so I can easyly get 17 fps on xvid and 15-16 on divx 5
