View Full Version : ac3 2.0 vs mp2
What is considered a good enough bitrate for stereo sound in ac3 and mpeg1 layer-2 for keeping file size to minimum.
Is there a reson for using ac3? My h+ can perfectly playback mpeg1 layer-2 sound tracks. So probably question can be rephrased as which track would take less space and less time to encode.
Thanks

i (only) believe that ac3@192kbps should be better than mp2@192kbps.
though, lame's mp3 beats the shit out of both :D.
Yes mp3 is good but not an option for dvd production...

@ Gorr
I don't think you can afford to pay hundreds of dollars to buy an AC3 encoder, so you'll got to stick to MP2.
MP2 delivers decent sound quality with at least 224kbps
Just for information: AC3 2.0 delivers decent sound quality with at least 192kbps.
And MP2 encoding is a lot faster than AC3 encoding.
Now now Dg, don't swear...thats a rule #4 violation ( :D )
Thinking about what bobotns said....how you getting on with what I sent you? ;)

that gives us 185.2Kbps for a dual channel encoding of signal at 44.1khz.
as you can see, neither ac3 or mp2 achieve this, even @ 192kbps.

Perhaps I've missed something here. Is it feasible to think about MP2 in respects to 1 or 2 CD rips? I've only seen MP2 discussion in regards to SVCD:confused:
Guess I'm still a die hard AC3 fan until something else sounds better to my ears and achieves a nice compression ratio with muxing capabilities.:D
