When using Smartripper you can select stream processing and then demux the ac3 to an extra file. Otherwise you'd do that with DVD2AVI.
Is there ANY difference?
TIA.

You have to use DVD2AVI 1.76 to extract audio, if you want 100% synch video.

ya, I'm always successful using dvd2avi to do my demuxing.
TIP: first I choose in smart ripper stream proccessing to only rip video and the 6ch audio to make my vob files as small as possible. then if demux all is checked in dvd2avi you won't have to worry about 6 different demuxed audio files.

Are you sure stream processing / direct stream copy doesn't screw up synch audio?

I use SmartRipper's stream processing all the time to get my audio. Never had sync issues with it. But very rarely it does produce an AC3 stream with an invalid header or something, but nothing AC3fix can't cure.
