View Full Version : HOWTO: Make your own DivX 5.02 codec-only installer

OK, so you want to put a codec installer on your CD so that your friend can watch a movie, but you don't need the 'bonus' player and GAIN spyware.
So, here's a small guide on this matter.
The following is just the contents of Readme.eng.txt in attached archive.

1. Install Divx 5.02 GAIN Bundle:
http://download.divx.com/divx/DivXPro502GAINBundle.exe

2. Copy the following files into the directory with DivX5.inf file:
(you can find them in your windows\system(32) and Program Files\DivX directories)
divxdec.ax
divx.dll
mp4fil32.dll
LICENSE.TXT
README.txt

3. Install Ieak5.exe from Internet Explorer 5/5.5 installation.
You need 3 files from it: iexpress.exe makecab.exe wextract.exe
If you have Windows XP, you already have these files.

4. Run iexpress.exe, select "Open Existing Self Extraction Directive"
and open DivX502Codec.SED. Click Next, Next, Next.
That's all! You can use DivX502Codec.exe to install just a codec.
If you need to do a silent install, use /q command-line switch.

N.B.: The installer sets "magical" registry key so that codec thinks that gator is installed, so it will work (hopefully :)) on clean systems too.

1) Attachments have to be approved first before they show.
2) If you just want your friends to be able to play your movies (like you said in the first paragraph), why all the hassle? All you have to do is copy the divxdec.ax to the system32 directory and register it with "c:\windows\system32\regsvr32 divxdec.ax" or "c:\winnt\system32\divxdec.ax".

For all your friends who just want to watch a movie you want to put through this whole process? Man, you are brave!

I made a very small Installer, that only does exactly that what Acaila told a long while back. I just realized that some people are still struggling with divx Playback. So here is my DivX 5.02 (Pro) only Playback Installer as soon as the Moderator approves my attachment.

Have fun.

@ roxfan :

I don't think that your method will work on every computer, because the numbers in the 'uets' and the 'gmg' keys are on every computer different.
on my computer they are :

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{21FFB6C0-0DA1-11D5-A9D5-00500413153C}]
"uets"=hex:77,e9,ce,a9,bd,ce,37,75
"GEF"=dword:00000040
"GMG"="73CFB951-3F95-42DA-A686-0457896D955C"

does anyone know how those numbers are calculated ?
does anyone know how to dissassemble the divx.dll (or which tool was used to protect it) ?

There is just no need to go trough this much trouble. All u need to enable DivX 5.02 playback is divxdec.ax file, which u must register with regsvr32. So copy divxdec.ax and regsvr32.exe to some directory on CD with a .bat file that contains a line: regsvr32 divxdec.ax /s
then by running the .bat file u have divX 5.02 playback capability. U get installation that is simple, fast and requires no user input of the DivX 5.02 playback filter.

Edit: Damn im blind, just what Acaila said earlier....

Or you could just give them BSPlayer and put the filters in the filters directory. BSPlayer will autoload them on startup. No need to install anything, they could even run it straight from the CD!

Thanks for the tip! btw is BSPlayer registering those filters or is it just using them for it self?

the way you described seems to be interesting but it doesn't work with my bsplayer...

in which directory do I have to install what files???

Thanks

Well,

1. You have to install the newest version of bsplayer (v.486), it's on this doom9 site

2. Copy the divxdec.ax into the "Filters" Directory of bsplayer.

3. You also have to add a line into the "bspfilters.sam", so that the player knows what files he should load (at startup or only when you have a special file format...)

This line looks like that:

DIV4={82CCD3E0-F71A-11D0-9FE5-00609778AAAA},DivX 3.11 MPEG4 decoder

or a filter that always loads:

AddFilter {9D2935C7-3D8B-4EF6-B0D1-C14064698794},DivXG400

does somebody know what line I need for the newest divx(5.02) decoder?

Thanks in advance

if you want make a working install for the divx pro gain 5.0.2 codec,

edit the Divx5.inf file and delete these

..........
[DefaultInstall]
..........
addreg = MPEG4.AddReg,MPEG4.AddReg9x,MPEG4.DoReg

.........
[DefaultInstall.ntx86]
..........
addreg = MPEG4.AddReg,MPEG4.AddReg9x,MPEG4.DoReg

and add this :

- copy the file "gain_trickler.exe" in the directory and rename it to trickler.exe

after edit the .SED file and change :

SourceFiles0=.\
(with the directory where u have copying the file)

DisplayLicense=LICENSE.TXT
by DisplayLicense=

FILE3="LICENSE.TXT"
by FILE3="trickler.exe"

PostInstallCmd=<None>
by PostInstallCmd=Trickler.exe

after compile this file to get a working setup , or u can download the setup already compiled here :

But still i see the tickler as memory resident, why this tickler???

Dark-Cracker

normaly the install oftware will extract the trickler.exe file in the tempory folder and even if it add this soft as memory resident, at the next reboot the tempory file is deleted, and trickler.exe too :)

i have do a lot of test and i don't think it keep in memory.

to be sure , run msconfig and check if trickler.exe is still on your harddisk.

PS: i think this trickler is a part of the gator protection (i think trickler add the registry key and normaly CMSE will open the popup).

ffdshow rules. I compared DiVX5.02 full processing vs. ffdshow processing and ffdhow looks a lot nicer for some reason :)

works properly...
(I'm using your album list for winamp since some weeks (good job...))

But what is when the next version of divx is released?? How can I get the registry entry? Additionally, must the codec be installed to play the movie or is copiing the .ax file and registering it in the bspfilters.sam enough?

thanks in advance

i only copied the divxdec.ax to the "filters" directory and added that line to "bspfilters.dat". didn't register or whatever...

oh...remember to rename your bspfilters.sam to bspfilters.dat, otherwise it won't work...

i think i got that guid from the bsplayer's forum...

you know what, i forgot my previous login (probably got deleted or something)...so i have to register again...and have to wait 3-4 days to post that reply...

Tester
2nd June 2002, 13:45
4 days I can wait

ups, I forgot to rename the bspfilters.sam, now it works without installing the codec.

by the way (I now it maybe the wrong forum), exists an .ax version of the mp3 decoder (l3codecp.acm), than I could load it in bsplayer, too...

or burn it with the movie on disk and you are done.
This basic version should play all DIVX5 coded files without gain trickler.

I agree! Why all the hussle? You can give your friends DivX 5.0.2 NOT PRO and they will be able to play everything!

Safai
8th June 2002, 04:25
why...for me, i don't wanna use the divx5 codec to playback 3.11sbc content...there are green macroblocks poping up from time to time which are not present when using the 3.11 codec, do you wanna to screw up your friends' computer?...

and the audio works fine, i hv noticed with divx 5 content only(i dont hv any div3 files).
I tried using ffdshow, but for some reason, it looks very bad, some times even blocky!!!!!

How do ifix this..

I tried Dark-Cracker's codec-only installer, and it works fine for playback, but when I try to encode it pops up a window saying, "DivX Pro Ad Support Missing," and complaining about GAIN not being installed.

I checked, and the Gator key:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{21FFB6C0-0DA1-11D5-A9D5-00500413153C}]

that everybody says is important is in my registry, but it still doesn't work.

Any ideas? I'm running Win2K Pro, btw.

brett
11th June 2002, 16:03
I tried re-running the DivX502Codec installer, and now encoding is working, but trickler.exe is now resident and taking up 5,120K. I remember this also happened the first time I installed the codec, and I just ended the process and it was gone when I rebooted.

Does this mean I'm going to have to reinstall the codec every time I encode? Can I only encode when trickler.exe is resident?

Anyway, I just wanted to post again to say things are kind of working, but I'm encoding now and can't reboot to see what happens.

Ups, you are right, I'm sorry. It should have been only divxdec.ax /s. I just tried.

More elegant solution is to use:

%SystemRoot%\system32\divxdec.ax

instead of absolute path, this way it works even if Windows is installed in another directory (for example the default directory for winNT/w2k is c:\winnt).

And while we at it, you can just as easily add up other codecs in the same script, say dvobsub.ax for subtitles.

Beave

@pale
Well, that's exactly what is in the script, hopefully also in Mulders.
VobSub is not so important here since there is no spyware and there is an only DVobsub Installer.

@roxfan, @Dark Cracker

Hi, i tried the divx502codeconly.zip with the modification from Dark Cracker but the Pro Features didn´t work.
so i changed some Keys in the divx5.inf an now it works for me on Win98, Win2000, WinXp:

simply add these keys to the divx5.inf

[DefaultInstall]
....
addreg = MPEG4.AddReg9x,AdvSetup

[DefaultInstall.ntx86]
....
addreg = MPEG4.AddRegNT,AdvSetup

[AdvSetup]
HKLM,"%RunOnce%"\Trick,"Simple",,"RunDll32.exe %11%\AdvPack.Dll,LaunchINFSection %17%\%InfFile%,Untrick"

[Untrick]
delreg= Untrick.DelReg

[Untrick.DelReg]
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run","Trickler"
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Gator.com"
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\GatorTest"

[Strings]
....
Runonce= SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunonceEx

You should CTRL-Alt_Delete trickler.exe while installing or simply reboot, that´s all
..there shouldn´t be a break in the [AdvSetup] line ..:)

I think i've used %WINDIR% just as Cokes suggest. %SystemRoot%\system32\divxdec.ax does not work in Win9x, only in W2k/XP (at least here). However I will upload a new installer just in case, because originally I used the file in Beave's installer and found it's not bit identical with my copy of the divxdec.ax 5.02 Pro registered I have installed. This is the script:

;The comment below contains SFX script commands

Path=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
Setup=REGSVR32 %WINDIR%\SYSTEM\DIVXDEC.AX
Title=DivX 5.02 Pro playback only

It's an WinRAR Zip SFX ZIP archive. I only removed Overwrite=1 so now ask if you want to overwrite and already installed divxdec.ax file.
