Some thoughts on MPGx

Just wandering aboute the future :-)

I believe that somwhere in the near future our DVD players will support DivX. Therefor I have this questions for the gurus :-)

1.What is the quallity loss (aprx) from DVD to DivX and from DVD to VCD/SVCD/XVCD...?
2.Is Subtitling supported in DivX
3.Will DivX ever support Subtitling?
4.Does DivX support 5.1 and/or THX

I don't know about my guru status, but ...

1) depends on bitrate. In my view high bitrate mpeg2 is unobtainable for the mpeg4 codecs we have today. I'd say 10% at best, but it's very subjective.
2)and 3)DivX is a vidoe Codec and any subtitling is supported by periphials. If DivX is to be supported in future hardware players, surely subtitling will be as well. There's no problem muxing avi, audio and subtitling together in one file if that's what you mean. Look at Vobsub or Ogg, allthough it might not be implemented in any of these formats.

3) Ogg can have god knows how many channels ... se above about the periphials.

A general rule for all technology: If it's desirable it's there.
