Films that are easy to encode

I just ran a backup of my Harry Potter DVD and by heck it compresses well.

The film is 2 hours 20 and my 1 CD xvid and Divx5 rips looks really good.

(bitrate is about 540 with q3 vorbis audio)

I assume its because the film is so dark?

What other films have people found to be really easy to compress?

best compressing movie i've seen so far is "Quills", worst is "Saving Private Ryan".

Movies that compress well does not neccesarly become easier to encode, just smaller in size. I don't have a perfect example but manono can probably vouch for this with his twenty spins of Jin-Roh.

The Best I known of is Magnolia. I love compress it so much, sometimes I would pop my dvd in, and re-encode it over and over again, just to see how much more I can get. :D

shrek is easy to get good results, in fact the cleaner and more digital the initial source, the easier. I bet most computer generated movies compress well.

yep, such as final fantasy ... also, american psycho, crouching tiger, hidden dragon and charlies angels come to mind off the top of my head.

just finished enigma, 2.20mins on one cd at 512 ( comp test = 67 ), guess thats pretty darn compressable but i havent watched it yet, lol.

I've made a 1 CD rip of The Godfather which looks good. That's a 2h 50 min film.

I guess that's pretty good too.

I think it might be pushing it to try that with The Godfather Part 2 though since it's 3 h 20 long :)

my expierience is that lighter films look better than dark ones. i like it best when the picture is full of "sunny" colors, because you don't notice blocks that much and the contrast is better too. also i got the impression that with the right curve scaling in 2pass encoding you can make films with many action scenes look better than slow movies.

huh? that movie was a pain to convert... far too much details and not at all blurry. do you have any special treatment for that kind of movies?

my favorite movie concerning compessibility so far was scary movie, followed by ghost dog. the worst ones were all black and white, like dr. strangelove or some twilight zone episodes.

May experience is that 'clean' movies compress best.
That means first that it must be well made, without noise.
As I see many movie is cleaned in some way, so almost everything is unreal clean - faces, objects, cars, buildings etc.

Good example is Mission to Mars, it looks very well on 1CD rip.
Or Ocean's Eleven from 1960, it's obvious that it is very spruced.

A really bad example is "Trainspotting" (at least the DVD I have, it was very cheap and only contains dubbed audio - maybe also the movie is worse than the "real" one. It is not a bootleg, though).
Around 90 minutes, should be an easy 1CD rip, I thought. I had to use temporalsmoother(2,1) after resize and use a 576 resolution to get it on one CD in acceptable quality. The result almost looks better than the dvd at first glance because of the filtering. They should have filtered the DVD in the first place, it would look a lot better, I think.

well, i have converted it twice ( one a 2cd, the other 1cd ) and i thought that 2 cds was overkill ( but i don't mind paying for extra cds and the extra quality ). I redid it using japanese sound streams ( shoulda had eng/jap for 2cd ) and ogg audio for the 1cd rip, using temporal softener (2,1) and i was happy with the result.
