View Full Version : Are these programs Intel optimized?

Hello, just wondering if anyone else has these problems; the speed of pulldown and multiplexing on my AMD 866 is WAY slower than on my Intel PIII 500. My CCE speed is better on my AMD though 1.050 compared to .54 with the Intel but the other programs I mentioned for example the pulldown would take 5 min to complete on the Intel but my AMD would do the same job in 1/2 hour ???? When pulldown is activated on my AMD it goes slow then fast then slow and so on.
I know that pulldown slows on my Intel when I scroll through my email with my mouse but I am not doing anything on my AMD?
So was wondering if I somehow need to setup these program to be AMD optimized ?
Please help

I don't know for pulldown, but muxing speed depends much on HDD-speed. Maybe the HDDs on your Intel are much faster?

If they were optimized the only thing that would matter is if your AMD has the same extensions that Intel does, like MMX and SSE and SSE2. If your AMD is new enough then it should have all of those except SSE2.

sounds like your in PIO mode on your AMD..see device manager to check

Thanks for responding :)
Labersack - The hard drive could be the culprit, I'll try a different drive.
Jason28 - My AMD is a Duron 750 (Overclocked to 866), does it have the right extentions or should I get an Athalon?
mrbass - I have my IDE channels set for DMA.
I'll try a differnt drive and get back to you. What's a good little hard drive speed tester?
Thanks

Hi Holomatrix,
sorry to say but only Durons with the Morgan Core (1000 MHz and above) support SSE. if you're using PowerDVD 4.0 then you can do a quick check which instruction sets are supported by your CPU. Use "Configuration/Information" and scroll down to "Hardware Information" - there you will see all the info about your CPU.

Ok, I'll check it tonight. So it's the SSE that's makes a difference with the speed of pulldown and bbMpeg but not with CCE ? or will this SSE compatable chip make it all run faster?

Look's like the drive was my main problem :) pulldown on my IBM 8GIG takes 15min and on my WD 30GIG takes 5. I'm going to assume then that my WD is 7200rpm and the other is 5200. also my Duron is not SSE compiant and I am going to upgrade my chip too because it makes me wonder what other progys are affected by not having the SSE instruction set. Anyway, I'm just babaling to myself, thanks for the help guy's.

Hello again,
just to satisfy your (and my :D) curiosity, I did a quick test as I own a 1.2 GHz Duron with Morgan core and a EPOX mobo that allows me to switch on and off the SSE support for new Durons/Athlons by BIOS.
And here are the results for a 800 MB MPEG2 file:
with SSE enabled:
TMPGEnc Simple De-Mux: 2:12 Min
TMPGEnc Simple Muxing: 7:03 Min
bbMPEG SVCD Muxing: 3:35 Min
with SSE disabled:
TMPGEnc Simple De-Mux: 2:42 Min
TMPGEnc Simple Muxing: 7:36 Min
bbMPEG SVCD Muxing: 3:51 Min
Test was done on the same system with always the exact same settings on the same empty hard disk in the same order, ...
So you see that you will get a speed increase but not dramatic, and as I'm only doing PAL I did not run pulldown - seems some day I have to buy a NTSC DVD for testing. ;)
I chose TMPGEnc as it has built in support for SSE and I made sure it was used/not used.
Hope that helps,
Gerti
