View Full Version : My dumbass method of DVD "Ripping" maybe someone can help

I've been around the DVD/CDR scene for a while not not too involved since over a year ago. I was pretty involved in dVD ripping prior to when DeCSS came out.

anyway I use to "Rip" dvd to VCD by this method. use a PC with a hardware MPEG1 encoder/capture card and jack my settop dvdplayer to the encoder and record away.

till this day I still "rip" my dvd pretty much the same way. Dvd player -> Video CApture card -> encode to Divx.

Sure I don't get the best quality as a pure digital rip but it works on all the movies.

I tried getting into the "Real" way of ripping like following the guides in various net sites. I feel it's very complicated with SMARTRIPPER, AVISYNTH etc.. with all those programs to use/setting and chapters/audio streams etc... and every movie seems to work differently.

is there a simple dumbass method that should work with all movies and very little hassle? I really don't have the time to get too involved in theses things anymore.

thanks in advance.

No no, it is NOT very difficult, you only preceive it to be so. Had you actually sat down and used an hour to follow one of the guides step-by-step, you would feel much smarter, and actually laugh at yourself for having been so bewildered the first time.

Personally I would say the smartripper/avisynth/virtualdub way IS the easiest one.. perhaps it might feel a little intimidating at first, but once you know the basics, it will feel like the easiest and most convenient way, and also give you more control. The so-called more user-friendly programmes are IMO not really so.. I remember the first time I tried one of those "easy" programmes (when I was a newbie), it was every bit as intimidating as avisynth/vdub.... but you know why I use vdub today? Because
that actually WAS the easiest way I found.. <g>

And please don't talk about not having time, because then you should simply have watched the DVD right? You can't be that busy when you even have time to watch movies/series on dvd can you.. And as for wanting a simple dumbass method.. if you really rate your computer skills and what not so low, maybe you should reconsider ripping at all? Ripping and encoding never is easy if you're a complete n00b who are unable to follow guides for one reason or another.

Sorry if I sound rude.. I'm not even sure how my tone is as english is not my native language, but it's just that I really do feel that you're not making enough an effort.. not only you, many others seem to do the same thing. A friend of mine wanted to rip something, I sent him over to doom9, and 2 minutes later he said it looked too difficult.. jeez, thanks for the effort pal! I always wondered how he became an mcse and what not anyway.. oh wait that explains everything :D ah cheep thrills indeed.

Again sorry if you really have tried hard and still not figured it.. maybe someone else can actually give good advice in that case, but as I always say.. if you can't understand a ripping guide, then maybe you really shouldn't be involved in such things to begin with.. :sly:

EDIT: sheesh.. are you actually capturing the videostream from a dvd player through capture card? wow.. bad bad BAD! :D well you won't actually be illegally breaking any encryption with that method though.. interesting.

I can only agree... you are capable of capturing analog video to hd and converting this to divx - and you want to say ripping and converting is too complicated for you?
That's simply not true. I personally find ripping and encoding with Gknot is much easier than capturing analog video, really! Just try it, it sounds more complicated than it is.

hehe thanks I'll give it a try.

btw: where is the guide for the Smartripper -> avisynth -> virtual dub ?

most of the guides seems to take a longer step.

if u canprovide link to a recommended/easy ripping guide I would much appreciated.

thanks

Yes, to get into virtualdub you need to create a DVD2AVI project file, SmartRipper2.41 did have this feature but it's buggy.
So unless you like frameserveing from flask, you need to create a d2v project file with DVD2AVI.

I think doom9's Gknot guides are reasonably easy to follow.

Aggreed there are they are far from a single step solotion. But once you get the hang of it, it's really quite easy.

I have written a script, to try to automate SmartRipper, DVD2AVI, vobsub and Besweet procedures. Check it out (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25185)

Ofcause you should definetly try doing things manually, before automateing any procedures. And I'll be the first to admit that my script will fail on some special cases.

Yeah I did my first DVD rip.

mine was kinda a rookie first shot.

I smartripper the movie "SOLDIER" (ohh lord punish me for duplication such a crap movie) as and them use FlaskMpeg to convert it to
AVI with codex Divx5 900kbitrate and mp3 128, 48khz audio.

I would say during still scenes the quality is EXCELLENT but with high motion scenes the compression artifiacts are somewhat obvious (but then again I"m familiar with compression and know how to look for the artifacts).

quality wise it's alot better than my old metiond and less of a hassle once u do it once hehe. no longer going back to my old video capture techniques :)

again can anyone point me to a specific guide that describe the process thorugh SMARTRIPPRE and AVISyht and VDUB?

I"m still not familiar with
that

GordianKnot pretty much automates the encoding with Smartripper, DVD2Avi, avisynth, and Vdub. Only follow the guide on Gknot once step by step and you'll know what to do the next time without the guide.
This is the best method, I think, and it "grows with you" (if you can say that). The better you know the programs involved the more you can tweak manually, but you don't even need to to get great results.
