I have been trying to downsize this movie for quite some time and still cannot seem to get things right. The movie is "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back". I ripped all extras out of the movie and the size is 4.7g (slightly too big!).

I started by using ReMPEG2 to create an m2v. I set the scale factor to the highest setting (90%), selected 720 x 480, match source, and "full" search, and reference dct (got those settings from the tutorial here). 24 hours later (only 950 mhz!), the file that was produced is choppy and has "blocks". It's like the quality goes from good to bad every second. If I take the rest of the steps to turn it back to vob and burn it, the video quality remains the same.

Others have suggested using TMPGenc, but I can't seem to load all of the .VOBs since it only lets you do one file at a time.

I've been trying to figure this out for a while now, and I think it's time that I ask for help. I'm considering just buying the damn movie. Any light you can shed will be appreciated.

I cant help you with your movie but if you want to try TMPG, here's the guide http://www.doom9.org/mpg/tmpg-dvdencoding.htm . Unfortunately, I did a couple of movies already in TMPG but always bump into synch problem when remuxing it with ifoedit. Some advice: If you can't do it in 1 dvdr, then split the movie without transcoding.

limit maximum bitrate to 6700Kbit/s

Isn't that pretty low? I didn't want the movie to come out looking shitty. Leaving it at max allowed the files to be only slightly smaller (and they can fit on a DVD-R), but the movie had digital-looking blocks. I will try it though and see how it comes out

From my experience with ReMPEG2, the only settings you should set are the scale factor, 720x480 and "match source". Leave all other settings as default. I get good results for scale factor 75% or above. ReMPEG2's speed at default settings is acceptable for me too (about 8 hrs for a 2hr movie on a TBIRD 900MHz). I've only got one bad result so far, StarWars I at 68% (pixelation towards the end of the movie).

I believe Jay and Silent Bob is one of those movies like Training Day where you have to strip out some cells in the beginning otherwise it throws off the rest of the movie in Rempeg, producing those "blocky" effects. There have been many posts on how to handle this.

I have a P4 2000 with a 845 Motherboard. I use RMPEG to re encode movies and fit them again in a DVD-R. Lately I re enconded Beautiful Mind at 49%, and the quality was excellent. I think the hardware specs of your system have A LOT to do.

Maybe it's your monitor or eyes. One person's excellent is another's crap.
But system performance has nothing to do with the quality of the outcome.

use CCE instead, it's far superior
