Is (are) there any way(s) to use gknot (Gordian Knot) without ripping the dvd to the harddrive or is there a way to decrypt straight from the cd by using decss.xmpeg or some other method?
and it would also be nice if gknow supported adobe premiere plugins or xmpeg plugins or to be more precise allow gknot to use the XMPEG DVD Mism.
plus. how come doom9 never updates vidomi. i know nobody uses but still.
thank you.

not possible.. and it's stupid stupid stupid anyway.. you're ruining your drive doing it.. take it from a guy who prematurely killed a DVD-ROM by over-using it (listening to MP3 CDs all the time). VOBs belong to the HD and that's where you process them from.

as for vidomi.. are you sure?

Ok it's not possible but I wish it was possible becuase I dont have that huge of a hd to rip the whole movie to it (im working with 1.3 GB left) and I do have two dvd-roms so i can afford to lose one of them. Im pretty sure many ppl out there
would love to use gknot but cant becuase of hd space and end up just using xmpeg. It would be really really appreciated if gknow could somehow implement a way.
oh and sorry about the vidomi, i guess i shouldve checked first before saying. i guess i havnt read about vidomi in your news section for a while.

sorry, but this "feature" will never be supported.
you can buy harddisks for ~1.60$/gb now a days - you'll be happy ever after.

may I suggest a 160GB disc? you can have these in a nice portable box with firewire interface if you like.. ideal even for notebooks and for on the road... you can put a shitload of movies in vob format there to be ripped while you're away..

or check out the 100GB WD ones.. I have two of 'em.. fast, quiet and cheap... if you have 1.3gb left then you're in a dire need of a HD upgrade anyways so I would go all the way.

I will never tell a developer to implement direct CSS reading.. it's bad for both technical and legal reasons.. in fact I will strongly suggest to anyone never to implement such a feature. Not having enough HD space is no reason to kill a DVD-ROM.. for the price of one you can get at least a 20GB HD if not more..

Buying a 160GB ide drive might be a bad idear, if I recall correctly you need a ATA133 controller, if you want to go over 120GB.

Thanks for the "nice portable box" idea. I almost forgot they had those. Ill buy another hd and the case and its good 'cause ill be able now use it in the computers at my work (or anywhere else) which are way faster than my own.

I understand the legal reasons but what i meant was support for plugins (like xmpeg has support for premiere plugins and the dvdmism plugin) and the developer can't be charged for having plugin support. only the author of the plugin can be charged for that. in this case xmpeg already has a plugin for decss. and since gknot would just have support for various plugins ppl would be able to use the dvdmism plugin with gknot. I hope you understand what i'm trying to say here. and im sure gknot will become even more and more popular with this plugin support.

Isn't there a way to get the data from the DVD to be read to memory in chunks rather than continuously, which makes it much less bad from the point of view of wearing out the DVD drive.

Is it really that bad for it anyway? It can't really be that much worse than simply watching a movie off the DVD?

@ khp: yes you do need am ATA133 controller to go above 120 GB (the limit is in fact 137 GB, but that means 120 is the biggest size they make which will work with ATA100). But you can buy a 160 GB drive and have it recognised as a 137 GB one and hope that u have a mobo/raid card upgrade by the time it fills up.

phrentec, why don't you just sell one of your DVD drives on ebay and buy a 30GB HD for it (or bigger, depending on your DVD drive's value) ?

:)
