Windows XP

Hi

I would like your experiences by changing from Windows 98SE to Windows XP. Would it make any difference in Video work in general? I am thinking of upgrading to XP Professional.

You may expect very little change. Software what I use - VDub, DVD2AVI, TMPGenc, AVISynth, BSPLayer etc. work well in both OS.
Speed difference is marginal.
Only thing what didn't work by me in W98 is OGG Subtitle filter.
Anyway, if you have enough RAM it is worth due to better stability, you may use NTFS - no 4 GB file limit.

Based on my experience, WinXP is about 20 times better than 98se....no more:

-memory leaks
-annoying reboots at random
-if a program fails, doesn't lock up entire system
-much more stability

As for performance, I think it runs faster but then again it requires more RAM and more disk space....

If you want to capture with BT8x8 cards you should stick with 98SE, because you'll drive into driver troubles (WDM Drivers) in XP.
Apart from that there's no way around XP.

indeed, capture might cause some trouble.
i use btwincap, and it's progressing nicely, and usually working fine, but i do get occasional lock-ups (and need to reboot manually) with regard to this driver (happens about 10% of the times i wanna capture). (not in the middle of the capture.. it sometimes locks windows while starting vdub capture mode or wdm capture app).

if you find good wdm drivers though, i think you'll be ok. it's actually a nice os.. and i'm NOT a m$ promoter ... ;)

2000 is just as good as XP. Actually a bit better over all. I just recently got a cap card with a bt8x8 chipset and it works like a dream under Vdub and XP. Not a single problem. Now just a bit more saving and I can afford to replace my all in one ATI Cap and 3d accelerator card. Don't get me wrong it is a good card. But I just don't have the money to blow to get the current Radeon 8500DV with video in and out. But I could get a new 7500 or 8500 alone.
