where can i read more about sound formats available?

I seen losts of guide involving sound manipulation, in fact most of them do, assuming the basic familiarity with the subject.

I have questions like what is the difference between aac, ac3 and dts or even mpeg1 layer2 so colled mpeg2 sound.
What commpression technic they employ, which is more space consuming, which of them vbr capable?
Why on earth dts can't be tailored?
What purpose are they for better and such?
