View Full Version : Weird problem in XVID, please help.

Guys, XVID looks great to me but there seems to be a weird problem for me. I encoded a video and played it back using Windows Media Player (having XVID as FourCC) and I noticed the video looked extremely noisy (not talking about macroblocks), I don't think this noise was from the original video source. Anyway after numerous tweaks, nothing seemed to change the noise. Then I opened the video in Virtualdub and move the slider around to take a look at the video, the noise was all gone. Then I did another test, I played back the video using Virtualdub, the noise returned.. so only during the slider movement does the noise dissapear.

@Bulletproof,
hmmmm, which XviD build did you use to encode ?
and... what was your setting (detail) ?
could you do snapshots which contain the "noise" ?

This is what happens when I set the FourCC to DivX:

This is what happens when I play the video when the FourCC is XVID:

This is what happens when you view the video in VirtualDub by moving the slider around (FourCC is on XVID):

This is what happens when you hit play in VirtualDub (FourCC is on XVID):

As you can see, something is wrong here. When the FourCC is set to DivX the video looks really dark and some colors are off but its smoothed out. In the 2nd shot you can see that when I play the video normally with XVID on the FourCC that there is a ton of noise in the picture, but the colors are right on and it looks great (except for the noise). I actually did a test where I just put the blur filter to max in VirtualDub so all you could see was a flat color, the noise was still there. The noise also moves on its own also. In shot 3 you can see that VirtualDub doesnt show the noise when you use its sliderbar on the video. In shot 4 you can see that it returns when I hit play. Quite weird. I also did another test, I put the video through Nandub (without DivX3 installed, just the latest) and took a look at the video side by side and the nandub video had no added noise to it. I tried going to properties and disabling hardware acceleration, messing around with all that stuff, and I tried the filtering options of XVID codec, they made 0 difference to the playback of the video, the moving noise was still there.
I used the latest version of XVID, and setting the Quantization type does not matter either.

Here's another example I made:
http://www.liquid2k.com/humantorch/5.gif
The one on the left is the video encoded in XVID using quality mode (the mode doesnt matter I always get noise on playback) and the video on the right is uncompressed RGB (which was the source). Flat colors show the noise, and it moves when the video is in motion.

ANOTHER update, this actually might be a video card incompatibility problem, i'm not 100% sure though. I actually did another test and had "Enable Directdraw acceleration" on in Virtualdub, this played back the video without the noise, made the video a bit darker but it looked pretty normal (I think). I'm using a Visiontek Geforce 4 TI4600 with Windows 2000, anyone have the same setup? or does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening.

i had the same pb, and avih have really nicely respond to me and an other guy...
is your screen in 32bits ?
in my case, switch from 16 to 32bits solve the problem.
look this thread for explaination :

hope it's help
(mm i have no pb in virtualdub :/ )

Just a rather impertinent question:
do you use ffdshow for xvid playback?
If yes, did you check the noise option in the properties?

I'm thining the same thing. ffdshow adds noise to WMP playback even when I have the default settings (with noise disabled). I even set the noise to 0 and it didn't have any affect. Try using BSPlayer and see if that helps.

I don't think I know what ffdshow is, unless that came with XVID? Right now the only way I can the video to play somewhat normally is if I enable "Directdraw Acceleration" within VirtualDub, Windows Media Player wont help me at all, and I have all the acceleration settings on in there already. I will try setting my desktop to 32 bit and see what happens and also try BSPlayer.

ffdshow is a direct show filter which is able to play back divx3/4/5 and Xvid. furthermore it features some goodies like the option to add luma and chroma noise to your movie which is useful for blurry and/or blocky rips. for it distracts the eye.
if you don't have it try it. you can get it at

Well, setting my desktop to 32-bit did solve the problem. This is still definitely weird though, I guess it is a hardware compatibility problem, something isn't executing right cause none of the other codecs do this and XVID is based on DivX 5 right? and DivX 5 doesn't do this for me. Something in the decoder isnt liking the setup.
I actually think there were alot of advantages during the time the noise was in, the colors seemed brighter and the picture seemed dithered and sharper, colors like yellow also didnt color bleed.

XviD isn't based on DivX5. The programmers of XviD decidet to take project Mayo's DivX4 as theire base to make a very fine codec. one of the big differences between DivX5 and XviD today is the motion estimation and compensation.

Ok sorry, indeed XVID is a great codec and only seems to get better.

This problem happened with my TNT2, when i've installed DivX 5.xx. The picture was aliased, and noisy. The Divx5 somehow affect to the xvid's directshow filter. (maybe this issue was intended by Divxnetworks to ruin the xvid movies? :)) This happens on certain resolutions, while on others not.
Anyway, it all gone when i've uninstalled Divx5. :D

The new DivX was released today and surprise, a new feature was added "Film" mode. Could this actually been in the previous DivX and somehow got activated when using XVID? It says it adds noise to the video.

it should be easy to test this theory. open your xvid file in graphedit, any see if you have and divx components in the graph.
cheers

Something is being done somewhere... Because without ever installing DIVX4-5 or anything all the blocks & noise I was getting isnt happening. I compared my mpeg2 to the same made clip from a prior codec revision of xvid & it looks like its suppose to good but without the mpeg2 artifacts. It cannot be a driver issue with video card, bec I use the same default setting for omegadrivers & don't change anything. This is also while staying in 16bit, I didnt have a chance to compare 32bit before a fresh install of windows. But I can tell you I havent reinstalled ffdshow either, but from the looks of my clip I don't need it. I'll do a bunch more tests hopefully later this week. I havent had a chance to do any new encodes on the 5-12builds to compare to the old build output. Hopefully I can find my old build clips I think I saved them before I ghosted. I havent proven that its divx5 causing it yet, I need to do one more ghost so I wont have time to test the issue if divx5 is the cause.

I have the same trouble too. It seems it like to bleed downward and such when a person is jumping, or on a elevator, and they can be seen, etc etc. I hope its not a video card problem.. and i hope its fixed..
Other wise Xvid beta 3 isn't that bad. ^^
