Best setting for ffdshow?

Hi,
what do you guys think are the best setting for it?
Im using -

Post Processing at max
Luminance noise strengh at 15
x sharpen at 20
IDCT method simple 16383

Is there anything I can change to improve the quality

First people asked for the best settigns for nandub...
then there was people asking for the best settings for XviD...
and now it has hit the dshow filters.

Ok, I wont lay this on you easily. There are no "best settings" , period. They differ for every encode. One flick might need deringing but look like crap with deblocking. Another needs a spot of luma but sharpening totally destroys it.

Find your own truth.

You can't really blame him for asking. Most people would just like a fast and easy way instead of tweaking it. A lot of softwares out there have a defined preset, look at Lame's alt-preset for example, tweaked to an extreme. Remember even nandub have profiles(altho most of us don't use it :rolleyes: ), but it did help the newbies ease into the nandub.

Maybe we can set a couple profiles up for the ffdshow filters?

Longer answer:
ffdshow should be suitable for release in a few days. There are still some reported issues with TV output (I don't have graphic card with TV out, so I can't test) and libavcodec can't decode some AVIs correctly and produces visible artifacts (it should be fixed soon by libavcodec developers and for now changing IDCT seems to help). Now I'm implementing basic subtitles support, but it's harder than I expacted. Propably I won't wait until it's fully finished and release version sooner. I'm redesigning web page and writing some short documentation too.

Btw I think I will move ffdshow to SourceForge so I can use its CVS, mailing list and other features. Discuss ffdshow issues on XviD forum is a little bit strange.

There is a possibity to define presets so you can create your own for every movie and it will be automatically reused.
Maybe there could be some predefined presets for "types" of movies: for example dark, noisy, blurry, etc... It would be even better if ffdshow could automatically fit parameters to played file, but now I don't have any idea how could this be done.

When it comes to video encoding presets are very rarely used because they are too limited for the very unique nature of all movies/episodes.

Audio is more easily tweaked within its set of constraints to give a constant high quality for a certain settings profile.

Is it possible to store preset inside the avi (or ogg,mcf,ecc) file, so when I encode a film I can decide how it will appear by default for every computer, not only mine? Or even into a file with the same name of the movie file that is automatically loaded?

Storing preset in AVI is good idea, but implementing it wouldn't be easy. Storing preset in separate file and loading it automatically already works and will be available in the next release.

It doesn't realy depends on me. If there are some visual artifacts it is due to libavcodec and I'm not developing libavcodec. As I know libavcodec developers are aware of incorrect decoding in some cases and trying to fix it. I would like to be able to help them, but my knowledge about MPEG4 video compression is too limited.

Yes I could. Simple bluring is already implemented for unsharp mask and it shouldn't be too hard to extend it. But why?

sometimes i have to use stong deblocking because of the macroblocks.But then the edges of color dont show quite right and a little touch of blurring could help i think.Just an opinion,but I'd love it

Just a thought: if your final video has many blocks, and you personally don't like blocks at all, maybe you should try soft bicubic when resizing, or maybe even bilinear resizing.
That softens the video much more, so the blocks wouldn't be so visible.

You could also try using only H.263 quantization (this sugestion is only valid if you are using MPEG quantization).

yes i know :) BUT:they are not my own encondings.From time to time i borrow some cds i dont think they are worth to pay for renting them (tomb raider is an example).They r from friend that are too lazy to mess with xvid or maybe afraid,(some even stay with xmpeg,dont even use compressability check),so their encodings are not exaxtly cream of the cream But i think bluring could really help in these situation

I've added simple 3x3 bluring filter. Please test it to see if it is good for you, or if more bluring is needed. You can download ffdshow sources and installer from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow .

This version is only for testing, it's not release yet.

P.S. There is a small bug in blur filter, which slightly affects quality of filter. In CVS it is already fixed.

Btw gamma correction is very slow now. I'm trying to optimize it using MMX, but it's hard.

I'm having a kind of a knightmare trying to save the resize parameters (whether it is to a preset or a parameter file). When I load them again it won't assume the parameters from the preset file it keeps loading an old value I don't where from...

Ok I can save the parameters (size) but only if I choose to save them twice. Just once won't do.
