I am encoding some DV material captured from my camcorder. I am using DivX 5.01. Since you have created some very nice tools for automated encoding with VDub and comptest for DivX5.01 (now integrated :) great!) I think you are the one that will be able to answer the two questions I have:

1. I found out that deinterlacing by field separation gives a very smooth playback when compared to any other method I have tried (they seem jerky to me). But this gives me a 50fps video. I ran your comptest for 50fps video and compared with the results I got for the same video in 25fps. I am getting compressibility values that are roughly twice as high for 50fps video. (i.e. say 80% for 25fps and then 160% for 50fps - the same video just a different way of deinterlacing (twice the amount of frames of course)). Would I be right to take this as a rule of thumb, and half the result I get from your comptest to see what's the actual compressibility of my 50fps video? There is no 50fps selection in your nice proggie (future release? :))

2. Another thing is that to reduce some color artifacts resulting from PAL phase shifts I use a filter for VirtualDub (rmPAL). I haven't found any Avisynth alternative for this filter yet. Is there a way I can use VDub filters with your comptest? The comptest (and encoding utility too - same prog afterall) runs a new instance of VDub and there is no way to put my filters in to it! Or is there? How to do it?

Cheers,
YS

Hi :)

1 - Yes it's correct, you must half the result (be careful to enter the correct number of frames for 50fps)... i'll add the 50.000 fps preset in the next version ;)

2 - Actually there is no way to do this, i think you must wait a bit for this... i want first to complete the divx5 parameters set... anyway this is a very nice input, thanks :)

Hi Jonny,

Thanks for clarifying 50fps comptest results. I will use it for sure. To divide a number by 2 is not so much of a problem, but if you ever incorporate 50fps in your proggie I would be very pleased!

Shame about VDub filters, but I guess you only have two hands to type so we can't have it all at once! :)

Cheers,
YS
