View Full Version : When will Vorbis be final??

I'm thinking about buying a CD-mp3 player as there is at moment a good product on the market (jambaa! mp3cd-player st Media Markt for 111€).

But a CD-mp3-vorbis player would be much more interesting. Does anybody know when Vorbis will go final (as this would be the time when hardware producers would think about integrating that codec, right??)

Or does somebody know if any big company is actually planning about releasing a vorbis hardware player??

And will there ever be a player that can play ogg AND mp3??

thx APFELSTRUHDL

Usually the answer to this is

'It will be done when it's done'

There is a vorbis hardware petition on the net somewhere too, although I forget where exactly.

Wasn't the iPod hacked long ago to work with the PC as well as support Vorbis? Perhaps the Vorbis playback was rumor:rolleyes:

Of course Ivan is right, it will be released when its done. Here is the Vorbis petition- http://www.petitiononline.com/vorb123/petition.html Due to some childish statements that some users put in, well this petition might not ever see the light of day. Hopefully they can edit those out.

the spec for vorbis1 decoders is closed and set.

Exactly. When hardware vendors see an RC2 or RC3 commented on the code then they rightfully get somewhat spooked. IMO this is the reason why big name componies haven't jumped on the Vorbis wagon.

If they were to realize the decoder is already locked and ready to go then perhaps we would have in-dash Vorbis players in our car already:D

i think i heard the vorbis team is already working on an hardware decoder.

so why doesn't the developer team try to encourage the firms to implent there codec as this would also solve the problem of having to few resources to develop vorbis further.

or is the building of a vorbis decoder also free as vorbis is freeware??

A few days ago i phoned a philips sevice hotline (audio sector) and they didn't even know what vorbis or ogg is. So maybe we should wright several mails to a support mailbox asking for the implention of vorbis. Maybe if we get some people together we will achive more than with this petition.

Well the hardware decoder is something entirely different as this is what companies are actually purchasing from Xiph. So far this about the only thing they have that's generating any revenue.

As for the petition, it's been out quite some time and been publicized by several large web sites. Still, the problem is people still don't know what Vorbis is so they stick with what they know which is MP3:(

When someone from Xiph finds time to write the specs up then I expect to see big name vendors jump on board.
