Type-1 DV File

I have an AVI with FourCC 'DVSD' and it was grabbed from Sony HandyCam.

When I try to open it with VirtualDub,
it say that it's Type-1 DV file so VirtualDub can't handle
the audio stream, the video is ok.

I hope forum could tell me how to get the audio?

1. You have to convert your type-1 to type-2 DV format.
2. You have to capture in Type-2 format.



Int he type-1 Dv format the audio is mixed together with the video stream. In the type-2 format the audio is extracted from the video stream and stored in a seperate stream. Like in every avi file.

You can also frameserve through AviSynth (using the DirectShowSource command). In this case you have to do the audio seperately. You should be able to extract the audio as WAV file using your favourite video editing software (maybe the one that came with your firewire card?).

Instead of frameserving the video you should also try if you can process it by opening the type-1 AVI directly in VirtualDub (I think it depends on the VDub version if that works, 1.4.10 should be ok).

There's a very good free type-1 to type-2 converter which you can download together with PureMotion's EditStudio (the converter is free, EditStudio isn't).

There is a free (and kinda inofficial) DV codec by Panasonic which is a VFW-compatible modification of the MS-DV codec used for most DV captures.

But, you need to be able to open your file first with some program, then you can convert it to type 2 with the Panasonic codec...

This is what I used for conversion before I learned to capture to type-2 (with vegas video)

Use graphedit to set up DS filters in the following fashion

FileSource -> Avi splitter -> DV splitter -(both)->Avi Mux -> File writer.

Press the "play" Button and wait (RT on a 900 Mhz)

I have the same problem exactly with one small diffrence, my dammd camera broke the miniDV cassete, so now the only full copy is on my hard drive and I have no sound and I can't recapture in type 2 avi.

I tried what you recomended with graphedit with no luck, I get only the video with no audio.

I also tried some other filters but non of them wants to accept the file writer filter because of pin mismatch.

some help anybody ??

I know pure motion had a free "DV Type Converter tool" but I can't seem to find it there.

If anything can help you it's grahpedit. Type-1 is is a new avi format made for DS, so unless your file is dammaged I don't understand why you can't get it to work. Are you sure you connected both pins to the Avi mux? And are u sure there's aduio in your source avi i.e does it work in WMP?

Uhm, why don't you just play the file back onto a new DV tape?

If you want to convert the file, just load it in Ulead (or whatever program you are using. You must have some program like that, otherwise you couldn't have captured in the first place) and convert it to DV type 2 with the Panasonic or the Mainconcept codec.
Type 1 and graphedit is a little tricky, I guess...

For some reason, when I put it back on the camera and capture it back again to type 2 avi, there is no sound at all.

The type 1 avi playes perfectly in WMP with sound and when I load it back to the camera and play it from the camera then also playes fine.

for capturing I'm using a small app by M$, its a small and affective tool for that and its free (you get it with the DirectX 8.1 SDK just like GraphEdit).

Think I should try another software ???

Thanks for the advice, at least I have it on tape again !!

I'm shure I've connected both pins and I've also tried many other types of filters with no luck.

"aDVanced DV File Converter Pro" does the job but despite what they say that the only limitation is text written on the copied DV video, they also make the sound unusable by inserting pings and noises in it.
This might be a bug but the result is the same.
