Proving yourself as the best ripper from a 10MB (1-2min of playtime) clip? Please...

I have to agree with Hanty. ;)

This has been settled before. Nando is the best ripper. Always has been and still is. Just take the SBC release avi and look at that. No need to say more.

There's no such thing as a best ripper, it's just as futile as looking for "the best" settings for nandub. If you want to get anywhere close to the truth then you'd have to chunk it down to a bunch of categories...and even then it is highly subjective.

Whats the SBC release avi?

You don't know????
SBC - Smart Bitrate Control - Nando (the author of Nandub) has introduced this a while ago (a long one :D )and made a hack of VirtualDub called Nandub. Generally - it gives you another level of control over the codec - in this case divx 3.11. So far there has been no tool or codec that could give you such a level of control over what you're doing.
Most of the ripping groups still use Nandub and SBC as their primary way of doing divx movies.

take care

ivan_alias

Yeah, of course I know what SBC is! :)

I mean, the release avi. Is that some fraction of a film showing off the codec or something?

This is my question, not about nandub/SBC. But thanks for your answer anyway :)

Hanty
14th May 2002, 13:25
...and most of the ripping groups stick with it out of lazyness or inability to learn something new. That's the scene for you.

Ok...I misunderstood you....You know - english is not my native language...
So answering your question (hopefuly I understoo this right)...
SBC release avi is a movie made using SBC released by a ripping group.
You can find them over the net. Most of the time they have the full name of the movie, codec used and the name of the group as their filename. So often the filename is 100 characters long :D

aleksander

p.s. After reading TheWEF post (few posts below this one) I have to agree that I need:
1. learn English once again :)
2. learn something about old days of divx and divx scene :)
3. Shut up for a while...:)

ivan_alias
14th May 2002, 13:46
Oh right I get it...

I thought there may have been a selection of avis that show off the codec in some way. (perhaps 10-20 MB or something)

Thanks for clearing it up and maybe this thread should be closed as talk of warez is not alowed....

Or could it be that most are smart enough to avoid the pitfalls as we have seen with Divx 5.x? Or could it be that they don't get enough control out of Divx 5.x as they do with SBC? Or could it be that they hardly seen any quality difference between SBC and Divx 5.x?

I could keep going but I think you get the point;)

BTW- You expected the "scene" to move over to Divx 4.xx when it arrived? It was never even seriously given a thought. IMO the "scene" has never had a reason to move over to another codec...well until now...XviD releases are coming to a screen near you:) (<-Just a hunch, I of course have no inside information:D )

very well done, good music, well cut, contains scenes from "crouching tiger, hidden dragon",...
it was the first ever sbc-encoded avi released to the public, right before "beggar vance".

i had it, but i cannot find it any more. :(
i really would like to see it again - does someone have a link (too lazy to search IRC)?
Joebuck JR?

btw.: IMHO "who is the best ripper" should be discussed on isonews... :sly:

Matter:

XviD was my entire argument, it's been good to go for a long while, you don't see me advocating DivX5 anywhere.

My point stands, fear and lazyness is what keeps XviD from being embraced by these groups.

From the nfo:

VCDVaULT
Pioneers in the Development and Implementation of DivX :
mOVIE iNFO :

Smart Bitrate Control
Sample Rip:
rELEASE: 03.14.01

SBC Info :.........................:.vV :

The developments on the encoding engine have continued
(with_nn_ as main developer and the rest of the team testing
and suggesting) and are now lightyears away from the leaked<---<see note below)
beta 7. We call it :

Smart Bitrate Control (SBC)

As of now, Nandub has following features:
* it inserts KFs w/o codec reset,
* it changes the codec's bitrate on the fly, at each frame
(if necessary), w/o codec reset,
* it manipulates many internal parameters of the codec while
it's running which completely bypasses the static compression
limitations usually used in vanilla LM/FM, therefore the encoding
process does not use "Low Motion" and "High Motion" DivX codec
but instead transforms the codec parameters into what is best for
the particular scene,
* and it has an accurate motion detection algorythm.
* motion-based compression control/modulation
* motion-based crispness control/modulation

Visit #vcdchat on efnet and ask for a copy there. I would hope that someone there has it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: The nandub beta 7 was not leaked. It was stolen with a trojan from one of the newer members of vV at the time. This is the same trojan that spread through the entire scene and eventually got many of the groups busted. That was the raids that happend a few months ago. Had vV, Isonews and few other listened, those busts could have been avioded. They all had plenty of time tighten things up, but failed miserably. Some people avoided the busts by removing themselves, but did little to curb to onslought of leaked ftp accounts and ips. It was a wall of arrogrance and fight of control.

Here you have vV's brightest and darkest day in one post.

no need to mention the complexeties of encoding to me though mate, how do u think i got to be a mod? u gotta know ur hands from ur feet

You have to be kidding me. You were just bashing the "scene" for being lazy. Flask is the most lazy encoder app out! I obviously don't have to mention it's output quality as it's been very well documented.

Then how do u explain this: make a Dvdrip using this; 3.11 Alpha in Nandub? Encoding, right? lol
And I dont think u can just drop him a VOB file, like he wouldnt notice :o

i dont think u get what im trying to say do u?
different films compress better than others, different files looking different on different viewing medium, and most importantly of all quality is subjective so this contest is nothing but ego boosting drivel in my, of course, very humble opinion

the only way to make it fair would be to set specific viewing conditions, a specific segment of a specific film and a specific filesize, as it stands its far too general to prove anything at all

Nandub was not released at the time. It was stolen. Later, an example/demo trailer was released to showcase the NEW nandub. With it came the nfo posted above. The nfo commented about an older version of nandub being leaked. This was not the truth. It was stolen from trixter with a trojan. I hope that clears this up.

Joebuck JR,

I've only read the first two posts, but I'm going to say this:

1. No one cares about being oped in some no name channel
2. Hanty, Manono, and I are the best encoders, period. :)
3. DivX5 is accually better then nandub SBC.

number 3 is debatable but if you do some heavy testing....which I did....you will come to the same conclusion. On a frame by frame comparison DivX5 is cleaner. Doom9's comparison is fualted by not showing close-ups. Don't get me wrong doom9 knows his shit, but we all put him on such a high petistool here...anyway...

note: XviD was not mentioned in this post until now and still was not brought up in a topic by this post. I don't know XViD and don't claim to know it. Je sait DivX3(nandub), DivX5, and SVCD's

Close ups? Why do we need to analyze images at a zoomed in ratio? It's common sense that artifacts will be more obvious if you want to blow images up and look at the pixels. Do you watch your movies zoomed?

Your one of the best coders and you haven't tried XviD after all this time?:D :D Seems to me Acaila would fit into this thread quite well.

poopity poop
19th May 2002, 07:34
well of course I dont; want to watch movies zoomed close he he.

I'm just saying that the actual information stored into a DivX file to produce a picture is cleaner than a nandub encode. If its cleaner in a DivX5 encode then when you watch a movie full screen with post processing it will be cleaner in general just because there are actually less haloing and less blocking and nosie int he orginal file when looked at under a microscope.

XVid...yeah...
I've been concentrating on SVCD's lately. With an mpg-2 stream at like 1800Kbps(2CD SVCD) you can get an incredibly clean pictre that rivals DivX. Of course it is twice the bitrate to get the same results but there are no mistakes and encoding artifacts. The reason I say that is because on a whim I did an encoding of the old THX intro the one where the soudn is al disinent and then it fades into a chord...well DivX5 on CQ=2 it was very small almost perfect bit for bit, but there were some quick artifacts in the stream, almost missed them...just made me upset.

That contest is only good to boost your ego. Every ripper will know for him-/herself whether he/she's any good. As long as you can be satisfied with the movies you make there's no need to let the whole world know.

@poopity poop:

I'm not going into dispute about which codec is better, but you might want to check out XviD sometime :D

I have a friend at work who is bringing my a DVD a day into work and I'm having trouble keeping up with him. Maybe next school year I'll check out DivX but:

"to each his own"

and I have a DVD player that plays SVCD's nicely

and I may be good but there are plently of people that are WAY beter than me like Manono and hanty and such. The only reason people know me is because I'm active here and the only person who made good Kenshin rips on DALnet and had an OC3 to distribute them ha ha. And looking back on them now...god they suck big ass. But I'm sure when you look back at your first real encodes you hate them ha ha. Hanty said to me once:
"We are our own best critic, and in the pursuit of constat perfectiong, but everything we make we think sucks"
Something like that

The topis is "Proove your self as the best RIPPER!" not codec comparisions.

Now, if you think for 1 millionth of a second that you can even step in to the same ballpark as nando on encoding you are highly mistaken.

Would you be editing the bits of a scene in a hex editor to make it look perfect. Get real man, no one has even stepped in the state the ball park is in. lol.
