Which are the most difficult DVDs to backup?

I have searched the Q&As and the FAQs (newbie protocol and all that,) to see if there was a listing of hard to backup DVDs somewhere, and I didn't see a listing, so I'll just ask.

Which, (in the opinion of the group) have been the most difficult DVDs to back-up using DVD2SVCD? I struggled with the Matrix for a couple of days before crying "Uncle."

And is there a place to look for detailed instructions on backing up particularly challenging discs? I did a Google search on 'Matrix Backup Guide' and found the link to Asyn Rayne's guide at DVD Digest, but the link was broken - probably a cease and desist, who knows?

Just wondering...

As far as I know there is no list like that. The problem with making a list like that is that some people have problems with some movies and other people dont have any problems with the same movies. I had no problem at all backing up Matrix. I did however have a big problem with Shrek, and lots of people had no problem with that at all.

I'm still not happy with the SVCD result of Atlantis. The source contains a lot of extra video 'information' that results in heavy blocks. Tried CBR at full bitrate, or VBR with more than 3 passes. Temporal smoother helps a little...

I have had a few that I simply could not do any thing with. Eagles When Hell Freezes Over, and recently Oceans 11 are two. In the case of the Eagles it is a hybrid, meaning a mix of different video types. Oceans 11 would not be ripped properly. I bet you there are many people in this forum that did not have a problem with either of these.

Which leads me to believe that much of it is os, installed software conflicts, and hardware related issues. Most have worked fine. I have intended for the longest to do a clean install with no additional software outside of DVD2SVCD related and give that a try with the difficult DVDs, just to see if it matters.

I think Jason28 is correct. Since SVCD using MPEG2 format and since DVD2SVCD use a great encoder like CCE, we are fortunate to have an easier time than the DivX folks.

For DivX, any DVDs with lots of water scenes will give great challenge to have a decent rip for these scenes. DVDs such as "Saving Private Ryan" (the Beach of Normandie scene), "The Abyss" and "Waterworld" (pretty much everything is water), should give a nice challenge.

The Eagles DVD has some weird frames in where it transitions from the behind the scenes stuff to the actual concert. This transition causes a problem with AVISynth. I use AVISynth to deinterlace and then encode using CCE. What I did was to use DVD2AVI and create two separate .d2v projects (behind the scenes and the actual concert). I cut the behind the scenes stuff a couple of frames short to get rid of the bad frames. Then I encoded the two .d2v projects and reauthored.
