Hello, Can someone tell me what's the ideal disk size when burning dvd. Is it 4.33 GB or 4.37. I'm using 4.33 right now but I've read in one of the guides that it's 4.37. I'm just wondering if I'm wasting valuable space. Thanks.

The "marketing" 4.7GB is actually roughly 4,700,000,000 bytes. When converted to "true" GB, it converts to 4.377216 GB and is the reason most everyone says you actually get around 4.38GB out of a DVD-5 disc.

Another tip for you is to try Nero. It draws a line that you shouldn't go past when burning DVD and increases the bar graph as you add data. I've come pretty damn close to it and have not had a problem burning successfully.

I personally believe the manufactures of these disc should be sued for false advertising. When u buy a blank 650mb or 700mb cd u get to put that much info on it(sometimes more). The DVD disc says 4.7g not 4,700,000,000 bytes. It is they that are using the gig terminology and they should be held responsible for giving what they advertise....or change the info to read 4.3g....I still dont know how they get away with this.

they get away with it, cause they are absolutely right !

Very smart people that made up computers, borrowed terms like KILO, MEGA, GIGA, TERA...but because computers work with binary numbers
kilo could not be 1000 but 1024 (2 to the power of 10)

What you mean is GIBI byte not GIGA byte (I know it sounds funny, but it wasn't me who came up with the term),
so you have GIBI (Gi), MEBI (Mi), KIBI (Ki) bytes (this really sounds stupid), what it means is GIga BInary, MEga BInary......I think you get the point.
It's confusing, but KILO stands for 1000 not 1024 and so on....
This terms were approved in 1998 by IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission)

SO DVD-R contains 4.7GB or 4.37GiB
