The reason why adaptec ASPI 4.70 breaks

Alot of people have written on this baord that downloading the new ASPI layer from Adaptec v4.70 breaks their ripping abilities

i never had i problem about this until today when i found out that Adaptec ASPI 4.70 is NOT the same as Adaptec ASPI 4.70 ?

i have had no troubles ripping with Adaptec ASPI 4.70 on my girlsfriend's computer and on my laptop.


This version of ASPI 4.70 was on a cd where i keep alot of drivers and update them regulary. this is for helping my when working with customers computer (I'm a PC handyman)

however due to virus attakc on the neteork at work i downlaod all the drivers again an put it on my CD. (just in case. so that i wouldn't spread vira to customers)


today i finally got time to install my brand new nifty dual board to my own ripping computer. no troubels with this
Install winxp fine
starting fariuse - tells me there is no DVD
install asusDVD 2000 v4.0 - crashes when tryin to play
re-ghosting winxp, reinstall driver (from my "new" cd)
nothing helped

however the aspi file form nero made it work
this was my first clue that somethin with the ASPI was wrong

i checked file size of wnaspi32.dll.
only 44kb the nero verison was about 150

i downlaod the aspi 4.70 again but still no luck and still a 44kb file

i wet to my laptop to check if it indeed had the 4.70 drives.
it DID have the 4.70 and worked fine.
the sixe of the file was indeed also 44kb on my laptop

then i tried running QuickSFV (a crc calculator) on both files (alptop/desktop)
and indeed they turned out different


so the files from the old download of the 4.70 was differnt form the new download of the same ASPI drivers

adaptec must have done something to them without telling

installing the old 4.70 helped and now I'm ripping/extracting happily with ASPI 4.70



In short
The old 4.70 works fine
the 4.70 available for downloading today are crippled



i have the old version of Adaptec ASPI 4.70 which can rip/extract etc.maybe Doom9 would host these files ?

would it be possible to post the CRC values of the good files and the bad ones so be possible to find out if users have the good or bad file?

Isn't there always a problem with installing Adaptec ASPI drivers when no adaptec hardware is detected?

I'm just experiencing this problem with the 4.60-1021 drivers: On my dad's computer they install perfectly and work perfectly (he has an old Adaptec SCSI adaptor).
On my computer, they seem to install, but they don't seem to work at all (I don't have any Adaptec hardware).

Your old 4.70 drivers might have been a modified version for systems with no adaptec hardware? Maybe?

I've installed the 4.60.1021 layer with ForceASPI v1.7 at least in ten different computers (all Win9x/ME, though) and I can confirm they work perfectly without any A_crap_tec hardware.

Yeah, I think you can also just install adaptec drivers with no adaptec hardware present, then install the aspi an unistall the fake drivers again (guess that's what forceaspi does as well?)

Ripped from the ForceAspi readme:

Here is a brief description of what each script does.

instASPI - Installs the latest, 4.60 (1021), Adaptec ASPI layer on Win9x, WinME, WinNT and Win2K. Any existing ASPI layers will be overwritten.

dumpASPI - Creates a backup of your existing ASPI layer, or parts thereof. Some Win32 operating systems do not have an ASPI layer, in this situation you will create an empty backup.

restASPI - Restores the ASPI layer backup created with 'dumpASPI'. WARNING! If your ASPI backp is empty this will completely erase your currently installed ASPI layer.

killASPI - This will completely remove your currently installed ASPI layer.

killDUMP - This deletes your dumped ASPI layer.
