Well, CuddleMonster, there are many options available for you. Have you had a chance to peruse "The Guides" at www.doom9.org yet?

Hi-

I don't know man-can't see the forest for the trees or something? jggimi points you to the guides and you respond by saying it's not in the guides? Fox Mulder is even more specific, and you again say they're not for producing .avis or MPEGs? Have you really read the things? A DivX file (made from the DVD .vob files using DivX 3.11 or DivX 5 or XviD) is an .avi file. An SVCD (made from a DVD using DVD2SVCD, for example) is an MPEG2 file. If you're serious about this, and not just intent on wasting your and our time, I'd say go back and read the guides more carefully this time. What you're asking is what this site is all about. It's all there.

And don't they teach things like grammar, punctuation, and capitalization where you come from? I might suggest using them if you want to be taken seriously around here. But at least you were polite and friendly, so I'll just close by saying:

Good Luck.:)

Let's give cuddlemonster a break. It's possible to have an objective, yet not see the solution, even though it may be reasonably obvious to others. Doom9's guides start with the tools, not the objective. For example, there are "DivX" guides and "VCD&SVCD" guides; they don't say "creating .avi files from dvd" or "creating your own standalone discs."

Cuddlemonster.... to create standalone .avi files using the DivX codec, Doom9 has several guides for different releases of DivX, and includes ratings on ease-of-use for the different encoding suites. I happen to prefer GordianKnot with DivX5.01, there are many other alternatives.

To create CDs that can play on some (but not all) standalone DVD players, you can create VCDs (MPEG1), SVCDs (MPEG2), or XSVCDs (also MPEG2). Check at www.vcdhelp.com for your particular make and model of player as to the format(s) it may support, and whether it can use CD-R or CD-RW discs. Again, there are many choices, Doom9's guides give ease-of-use ratings for newbies.

Hey jggimi-

It's possible to have an objective, yet not see the solution

OK-Point taken. And that's what I meant by the forest for the trees remark. You get hit by such a wealth of information when you first come here that it's hard to figure out which things are the ones you want. When I first came here, though, I read and reread everything there was (admittedly much less back then).

In any event, I think a visit to the Glossary might help cuddlemonster as well. There he'll find definitions for such words as AVI, Codec, DivX, MPEG, MPEG4 and others.

Hi-

You better take over jggimi (or anyone else for that matter). You've got the patience of a Saint, and you may need every bit of it before this is over. I think I might lose it if I keep going. Bye.

Is this a joke?

jggimi

No, I don't think it's a joke.

I believe that all cuddlemonster wanted -- no, needed -- was a program with one button labelled "Convert VOB to AVI."

Since such a thing doesn't exist... as there are so many variables involved... Doom9 spent a great deal of time studying and recording starting methodolgies using many different transcoding suites.

It was unfortunate, but I fear our recommendations to use Doom9's guides as cuddlemonster's starting point were met only with obtuse incredulity.

@cuddlemonster

If you want to convert a vob to an avi (I think you didn't read the guides you were pointed to) you should use Flaskmpeg 0.6.

It's really easy. You load the vob or the ifo, select, which language you want to have, select the video codec, enter the output resolution and press 'flask it'.

1) Cuddlemonster hasn't posted since 11 May. I doubt he'll be back.

2) Even with Flaskmpeg, he'd have to do 5 things.
