View Full Version : New info on possibly "bad discs"...

I ran across something strange today. I burned a disc and it played back fine. Now the first thing I noticed was that the player seemed to take a bit longer than usual in recognizing the disc, lighting up "DVD" and starting playback. I tried it a number of times and it played everytime so I wasn't totally worried. I then applied my disc label as I do with all of my discs. After that, the disc would not play at all!

I always apply labels to my projects so I found it strange that this one would cause a problem. I decided not to just toss the disc. I spent some time peeling and scraping (carefully scraping ;) ) the disc label off. I then washed the whole disc in the sink using some "Era" liquid laundry detergent. After cleaning all the label off, I dried it and tried to play it again. Although the start up is still slow like it was at first, it plays everytime! Anyway, the moral of this story is, I wouldn't apply a label to a disc that seems to take longer than normal to "start up". It's probably on the edge of being able to be played at all and a label will just push it over.

I also wanted to note the "startup" time for anyone curious. Most all of my projects take between 3-5 seconds. This is from the time the disc starts to spin to the time the light it lit and playback begins. On this particular disc, this "startup sequence" takes anywhere from 10-20 seconds! However, even when it has taken as long as 20 and I was sure it was about to spit the disc out, it would play fine.

I've read it's not a good idea to put any kind of label on a disc. Although back in the SVCD days I did it all the time with no problems. Something about laser refectivity, discs becoming unbalanced, etc. Can't remember the thread. Labels sure look good, but I think I'll stick with my trusty felt tip marker....hey, it's less work too:D
