Changing volume of audio on my video

Hello, I have a captured avi and was wondering if I could get some direction on how to Increase some parts and Decrease other parts of the audio. Do I need to de-mux then use a program for this or can I edit the file directly? some help would be greatly appriciated.

Sounds like you need a program like Cool Edit or similar. Since you didnt specify fading or just flat lower volume. Yeah I'd demux it & preferably work with wav format. You shouldn't have sync problems as long as you take the audio out of the final movie & not before you final compress it.
