when i ripp a dvd and compare it afterwards the dvd with avs-file in virtual dub then the rip is always darker. I extract the movie data with "DVD2AVI" in YUV and PC-colorspace.
i know that i can set the brigntness with "levels", but i don't know how to find the exact settings, which give me the same brightness output as the dvd. it never looks the same.
Is there anybody who is experienced with this settings?

@scorchED,
just adjust the brightness from the XviD decoder DS filter
property, but it just the playback, not the material.
if you wish to change permanently you could use VirtualDub
filter.

but where can i get or read the exact settings for brightness??
the dvd-decoder-software software plays the movie brighter than the movie is. where does the dvd-decoder-software get his setting how much it have to brighten the movie?

I've noticed the same thing recently and it bothers me somewhat. But I'm not sure yet if it is just the Vdub preview mode converting to RGB or if it carries over into the encoded file in fast recompress mode. Or if so, if there should be any Full Luma Range / PC Scale / Tv Scale option that could be specified to DirectShow when playing the file.
Hopefully someday I'll figure out how these things work.

the encodet movie is too dark too, not only the preview in Vdub. i encoded the movie with XviD and only AVISynth in fast recompression mode in Vdub.
i found a little solution to set some good brightness settings:
i used the levels filter in Vdub in full processing mode. i let my pc process "all frames" in "sample video". after the process there is a graph where can i see where is the end of scale of the most brightened pixels. i set the sliders so that only the black graph is involved between the sliders. Maybe i let a little bit space between the right slider and the graph. If the graph shows a maximum for example "183" so i set the right slider to "190". So the movie gets brighter but i noticed that the colors get a little bit grey. But the moviebrightness looks like the same than decodet with a dvd-player-software, even colors where gone away a little bit. I take the settings to the level-filter in AVISynth and deleted the filter in Vdub and made the compression in fast recompression mode.
Now i have to find out how to get original colors:confused:

Surely brightness is just a matter of taste? You are best off playing around with the dffshow brightness settings until you find some you like, & then storing them. I don't think DVD players are given brightness information explicitly by the MPEG-2 stream (except the luma plane); the brightness level is set by the software to be about what people like.

I have the same problem when capturing. I've tryed to use the levels filter in avisynth but noticed as well that the colors faded. In VDub you have in addition to the levels filter also a brightness/contrast filter. Increasing contrast here fixes the colors, somewhat. I have not found the same filter in avisynth. Perhaps one could use it as a plugin, does anyone know how this could be done?

there is a filter package plugin which is called "Tweak 1.2" just search the forum where to find it. this filters can set brightness and contrast.
i've not found a right solution for our problem now:(

Thanks scorchED!
In the meantime I've found another plugin filter to use with avisynth; tweak 13. this filter runns in yuv and should be a bit faster than using a vDub filter which has to run in RGB.
I can now tweak the brightness and contrast, directly in avisynth.
I have no idea what settings one should use to get the "right" picture, but I guess that depends on the source and/or taste.
