Subtitles and letterbox

To be sure they're always there, I use permanent subtitles,
That works fine. But regardless the settings in the Y position tab in the Subtitles screen they're sometimes out of the letterbox (the actual moviescreen) and sometimes they're on the screen, like in a theater.
I prefer the latter because I always use the zoom function on my TV set. When the subtitles are out of the letterbox they disappear from the screen then (sometimes partly).
Any suggestions?

you can change the subtitle position by previewing them in the preview window and there you can change the sub position so it will be placed where you whant, and if you whant also can change the color of them. if your player supports cvd or svcd subs i recomend that you use them so if you use the zoom in the tv the subs will stay in the same place in the tv and with the same size what means
that problem of the subs becoming not visivel will no longer exist.

I noticed the same problem with v1.0.8, I don't know about v1.0.9b1, because I haven't had the time to test, and, as I said, it seems to depend on the movie (16:9 or not?, I haven't been able to verify).

With v1.0.8 I used to correct the subtitle position in preview mode, but the final result proved not always to be reliable. Sometimes on, sometimes off the letterbox.

That's why I use(d) the following workaround: Do a test with a small part of the movie, a chapter or less. Encode it with Y = -1 and CBR (just to make things quicker) and see where the subtitle position is in the final result. Estimate the number of lines the subtitle is below (or above) the desired position, for example 1,5 times the distance between two subtitle lines.

Then start again, using all vob files. After ripping the subtitles you have plenty of time to correct the "PermSubs.txt" file. Use notepad on any other editor and replace the position values by corrected ones with the find and replace function: e.g replace the string ",430,en" by ",385,en" (original position minus 1.5 times the line heigth, which can be calculated from this file as well) and then replace ",460,en" by ",415,en" (for one line subtitles, they start on a lower position). Use your brains when doing the global replacements, because things can go wrong (think e.g of possible three line subtitles)!

It's not a real solution, of course, but, as long as the problem hasn't been solved (and as I said, it might have been solved already), it works.

You're right but I use the player in the PC hooked up to TV set. And VCD/SVCD subs don't work on the PC DVD player/Hollywood+ decoder but thx 4 the advice :)

I have the same problem with permanent subtitles for some reason sometimes they are in the right position, has in preview, sometimes they aren't. The subtitles arent also smooth.
