When do you have to set "Field order" and when to use Automatic?

While using some tips to solve the "Matrix" effect on one of my backups, I found that setting the "field order" to "B" fixed the problem. My question is this - other than testing a sample chapter on the DVD how do you know when automatic will not work? OR is there a way to tell if "A" or "B" is correct and manually picking the right one (again without testing a sample chapter)?

Also as a side note - the "Field order" choice is not saved in the ini file (when using CCE). You can manually edit the INI file and add CCE Field Order=1 (for "B").

Well, in fact I had hoped that "automatic" would work every time, however, I think that I have hardcoded the pulldown command line to always odd (or was it even, I don't remember). Unfortunately I don't have any sources (dvds) where it has failed yet (see the other thread of yours).

@dvd2svcd: An example could be "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" BBC series Region 1.

With automatic setting goes to "odd" while the movie is "even".

I had to demux, pulldown and mux again the 6 mpegs to switch from odd to even without re-encoding.

@brynh: I suppose you can use tmpgenc deinterlace filter to check the field order without encoding anything. There was a guide on Doom9 on this topic. If I remember well in goes like this:

1., Open your .avs file in tmpgenc (disable the directshow filter if you can't)
2., set 'Top Field First (Field A)' on the advanced tab
3., go to deinterlace filter
4., move to a scene where there is horizontal movement
5., now select 'Odd Field' in the combo
6., press right arrow and check if the movement is continuous
7., now select 'Even Field' in the combo
8., check the movement again
9., the one that resulted in a smooth movement is the right field order
10., to check the opposite set 'Bottom Field First (Field B)' on the advanced tab and go to step 3.

Or you can use Bitrateviewer to directly check the VOB.
Out of several general information, it will tells you if the Top Field come first or not.

IIRC you have the Shrek R2 PAL DVD? - The "Interview" bonus material (VTS_04_0.IFO) which is in 4:3 format is true interlaced PAL no phase shift or something like that. The "Automatic" setting failed on that with 1.0.8 Build 1 and CCE - and it seems that this applies for the 1.0.9 Build 1 and CCE also as it sets the "Upper field first" option checked for CCE if set to "Automatic" but the clip definitively needs "Upper field first" unchecked with CCE to play correctly on a standalone.

@All:
Be aware that TMPGEnc and CCE are not using the same definitions for Top/Bottom Field - if the result with Zoltan's method is for example "Top field first (field A)" then you have to use the "Bottom field first (field B)" for CCE and vice versa.

Perhaps it would be better to match the field order definitions for TMPGEnc and CCE so that both will reflect the same setting - it seems TMPGEnc shows the same value like BitrateViewer for the field order.

So CCE's "Upper field first" option unchecked should become "Top field first (field A)" - because from my experience (and IIRC mrbass also mentioned it the other day) this setting is the one to choose for the most true interlaced movies for converting them with CCE and so it would match the TMPGEnc setting for the field order also.
