Perhaps there will be a specific xcd player? It could play other things as well such as all wmp compatible formats. As for closed formats I wonder if winamp plugin support could be programed in. I believe I've seen someone working on a player that includes winamp plugin support. That way you would be able to use the rm format via the realmedia plugin. I know winamp supports wm formats natively but perhaps there is an older plugin that supports them (from the days before winamp supported it) that could be used.

Thoughts on programming a xcd player? or contacting the developers programming a winamp plugin compatible player to include xcd support?

There will be a playback DirectShowFilter for XCD, so every DSF based player will play XCD fine ..... but expect Core Media Player ( aka PowerDivX 4 ) to be the official XCD player ( at least this is what we hope we will be :D ) ...

but you know that you will be unable to play closed formats with xcv without some kind of plugin like that. I have found both an realmedia and a windows media plugin. Now using them with the video plugin for winamp I was able to play both of these burned to a cd xcv style.

Are you saying you managed to play a RM/WMV file directly from a Mode2 CD? This is pretty interesting! I have little knowledge about these WinAMP video plugins and how it all works. Could you please explain the process one must follow in order to play these files?

If WinAMP plugins are the only way these things can be achieved we should look at this carefully. Perhaps making a WinAMP-DShow wrapper filter? (I'm just dreaming now ;)).

BTW about the XCD player, in order to fully support a XCD you'll need both a DS filter and a supporting application, because some XCD features such as menus or playlists will be only available through the player (the DSF only allows loading and decoding the XCD movies, just like the DAT files on a VCD). However we are still discussing this, and the best ways of integrating it all.

Your going to need to download winamp. Or a player that can use those plugins. Then download Tara's Audio/Video Plugin. You can grab it off winamp.com install both files properly. Then simply put in the cd burned in mode2 then select add file to playlist in the drop down box you will have to select all files to see the file. Then just push play. You do need the xcd dsf of course.

I'm not sure if having RealPlayer installed is a requirement or not... I do have it installed myself. Your going to need the windows media file upgrade. I can find the link a little bit later as you will probably need it.

Well I tried playing both a RM and a ASF/WMV burned in Mode2 format with WinAMP but I wasn't able to make it work. I installed the Tara's plugin and also tried with both the standard WinAMP WMA plugin and the old ("free") one. I'm not sure if I miss something.

BTW the RM plays fine in WinAMP from the HD so I guess it's not a Tara's plugin issue.

What are you exactly referring to with this "Windows Media file upgrade"?

its a file you would have to install to play windows media files if you didn't have wmp 6.4+ installed.

I have no idea why it won't work for you. I'm really not an expert and I don't see anything different that you did.

Stop dreaming, next Core Media Player alpha support Vis and DSP plugins, you can still reach me on #powerdivx on irc :)

Oh and for sure that CORE Media Player (AKA PowerDivX 4) will support XCD !!
