Submux and I-Author?

Whenever I use Submux to add subs to my mpg's the resulting file crashes mpgxmps everytime. Mpgxmps recognizes the mpg as having a packetsize of 2324 but about 10% into the conversion it crashes saying the "packetsize is probably wrong." The same mpg converts to mps fine before the subs are added.

I create my svcd subs with the usual process, Subrip using philips svcd designer format at 8bits.

I prefer to author my svcds using I-Author and preserve the sub streams as well but I can't handle all the bugs in I-Author's multiplexor so I was hoping Submux would solve my problems but so far I havent had any luck.

Does anyone konw what's going on here or have any suggestions?

Use submux to mux subs to your final mpeg (audio + video) and then use some other program like tscv for authoring.

I tried that but I just plain hate TSCV. Most of the menu structures I create are pretty complex with at least 70 stills and TSCV is just too buggy and too cumbersome to deal with that. There is no way to keep 70 menu's straight when they are all named smenu-0, smenu65 etc...

I tried just authoring using xml by hand but it takes too long for me. I-Author is the only program that does what I want but unfortunately, unless I am putting less than ~40 mins (anymore than that and I lose sync using I-Author's multiplexor) onto each cdr, I can't have subs.

Has anyone gotten subbed mpgs created with Submux or WinSubmux to successfully convert to .mps through mpgxmps or does anyone know what exactly is causing the problem?

finally i meet someone who is really a power user of I-Author and TSCV!

I've made a dvd-rip on one 700-mb cdr, svcd with 127 min. video and 112kb j-stereo audio, + 2 substreams (Chinese, English). On DVD standalone Mustek V56S the subs played mostly ok. In some position (not very few) were the subs slightly asynchrony, 1-3 sec. to early. But i don't know if it is a timing issue of the ripping programme.

Against to the statement of mb1, the I-Author muxer can mux the subs over 1 hour (in my case 2h07min. I think it is a problem of the dvd player.

I've the same experience of TSCV and direct XML-authoring with you, great!
But I-Autor has also many, many issues!!
I wonder, how can you put 70 still images in a I-Author project and successfully burn it on cdr? I found out that I-Author can max. handle 49 still images in a project without error. All my trying to overcome this limit resulted a bad *.cif image file, witch cannot be burned to cdr or converted to other image format. So i have to reduce the total menus pages from 76 to 49 to get a valid cd image.

Now to your question: I think the tool mpgxmps cannot handle the mpeg2 file with private streams(svcd-subs). The easiest way to solve the problem is to send a e-mail to the author of this program.(gandalf@dvdboard.de).
But why did you not use the muxer from I-Author, rip the subs from vobs in I-Author format directly?

My statement says that you can´t create longer subtitles with iAuthors OGT-Creator. Think that´s a huge difference :D

htc10825 that was a very rough estimate. I simply kept adding stills until CdMage returned errors in the final image. I forget the number but I just looked at the number of items I-Author added. I estimated how many mpg sequences I had and subtracted, but obviously I overestimated the # of stills I actually had. If you say 49 is the limit I definitely believe you. Sorry to get your hopes up, this definitely is a major bug in I-Author. I would absolutely love it if someone were able to patch I-Author to get around this limitation.

Regarding mpgxmps's non support of subbed mpgs, yeah I figured as much. I actually hoped that Gandalf would respond to my post since I know I have seen him post on this forum before. E-mailiing him is the next step, I just hoped I could maybe get some specific info so that I could at least try to solve the problem myself.

I use I-Author to multiplex my subs all the time, but like I said in my previous post, only when my playtime on each cdr does not exceed ~45 mins or so. Whether it is a limitation of the multiplexor or my dvd player, I don't know, but whenever my playtime exceeds this limit I always lose audio sync after that point. I have heard of this problem as being yet another bug of I-Author and since I have experienced it myself consistently, I tend to believe it.
