where does "smartdeinterlace" happen?

Ok - I have done a number of searches and cannot find the answer to this question.

I have already ripped a DVD. Then I ran dvd2svcd as usual. When I play it on the PC it works great, but when I play it on my DVD player it's "jumpy". This has only happened to a couple of DVD's. After some reading I have found that interlace may be the problem. So I wanted to try again using Smartdeinterlace. My question is as follows, does the Smartdeinterlace setting alter the "ripping" process or does this setting happen later on in the process. Basically, do I need to re-rip to get the benifits?

No you don't have to rip it again. Smartdeinterlace happens in the AVS script e.g. as part of the video encoding.

But as you describe I don't think you can solve it with deinterlacing. I think maybe you need to swap the fields in the video. You can see how in this thread:

Ok - I will try the pulldown idea when I get home.

Also, perhaps "jumpy" is the wrong word, it's best described by another post on these forums. It looks like the effect from the Matrix when Neo is fighting Morphus. When you can see "trails" of Neo's arms because they are moving so fast. Well my SVCD looks just like that (during motion seens). This has only happened to me with two DVD and both were children's movies.

I hope the pulldown trick works. I will report back tonight.

One other thing - in case someone else has any other ideas. One the first DVD that this problem occured, the problem was solved by using TMPG (rather than CCE).

I will update tonight with the results of the "pulldown" trick.

Ok - the pulldown method worked. I then did a re-encode with the "Field order" changed from Automatic to "B" and this also solved the problem.

Is there some reason that automatic didn't work? Basically, do you need to do a sample encode and check it to see if you need to change the field order?

I also faced the Matrix effect and had success with TMPGenc(see thread http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24600). I tried yesterday the re-encode with CCE and the "Field order" changed from Automatic to Bottom Field First and this also worked for me. Pulldown method was not applicable as I encode a PAL movie.

Can somebody explain what "Top/Bottom Field first" means, and has a technical explanation why it works to solve Matrix effect ?

With "Automatic" setting, why does it work with TMPGenc and not CCE ? Maybe that TMPGenc automatically choose Bottom Field first. I will make a test tonight with TMPGenc and forced "Top Field First".

Thanks for your precious info. As promised, I tried today TMPGenc with "Top field first", and it played perfectly like with CCE "Bottom field first. Reading your reply in the other post, I understand this is normal ! I will now digest the info you provided.
