Burning VCDs on Ulead DVD Workshop 1.0

Hello there folks :D

I'm using this program (DVD workshop) to make my VCDs with a menu, it works fine, i got a problem when i try to record the disc.. You see, i have made a VCD that has a total size of 748 MB but the 80 Min CD-R media can't hold this much data, so i thought using a CD-R 90 Min will solve the problem, right ? Wrong... I read about this type of media and learned that it cannot be used normally, usually you have to use Nero and Overburn to get the 90 Min... The DVD Workshop doesn't have a Overburn feature nor does it creates a standard image of the VCD (it's a proprietary format, .iax i think). Can anyone knows a workaroung for this ? I apologize if this was posted wrong...

I suppose that the size you are talking about is of an MPEG file (video.mpg, etc.)...

When you burn a (S)VCD, you do not burn it like a regular "data" CD, but in a special way (the same used for audio CDs, for example) that allows more data. In fact, a (S)VCD allows up to 10 MB per minute of disk, so an 80 min disk can hold almost 800 MB of MPEG video ("almost" because there are some extra data needed at the beginning of the disk; in practice, a 80 min disk can hold around 794 MB of video).

And we are talking about "real" MB, that is, 794 MB=794*1024*1024 bytes, or 832,569,344 bytes (how much exactly fits in the disk depends on the actual structure of the (S)VCD, but usually it is between 794 and 796 MB).

To record the data in that special way and to create the needed structures on the disk, you need an VCD-aware (or SVCD-aware) program, like VCDEasy or Nero.

If you have a file of 748,000,000 bytes, it is less than 714 MB and it will fit nicely in a 74' disk with no overburning at all.

As a rule of thumb, if you record in VCD format, you can fit almost as many minutes of video as you would fit of audio if you burn it as a CD-Audio disk (that is, 80 min of VCD video in a 80' disk, 74 min in a 74' and so on)

Thanks a lot for the info, but the problem is: the program (Ulead DVD Workshop) has his own burning routine (the sequence is: edit, menu, create image, burn), and the image it creates is not standard ISO, i cannot use it in another burning program...

i have discovered something about the image generated by the program: i loaded it on ISOBUSTER and it worked ! aparently it is an ISO image, i tried burning it with Nero using Mode 1 and 2352 block size and it didn't worked, i even tried Mode 2 and the same block size and it didn't worked either... next thing i'll try it mode 1 with normal block size (2048)... can anyone clarify this for me please ??

If you use Nero and try to burn an ISO image, you have to use Mode 1 and 2048. Here's the official Nero's FAQ page that will tell you how to burn an ISO image:
