View Full Version : subs in ogg streams cause weird effect

Hi folks,

when I tried to mux my latest rip with .srt subtitles a weird effect occured: The resolution of the resulting video had 640x480 instead of the previously encoded 640x336, the missing height was filled black.
I tracked the "problem" down to the subtitle mixer aspect ratio setting that was somehow set to 4:3 (probably a relic from a tv-series rip, btw. I'm using win2k). When I entered 640:336 and restarted the player, everything was fine.

Doing some research on Tobias' page (should have done that earlier) I realized I have encountered not a bug but a feature of the subtitle mixer, that is, to draw the subs on a black area of the movie that has not to be encoded into the actual video stream.

However there is a catch:
Hardware accelleration did not work with the 4:3 setting on,
so it was impossible to enjoy the movie.

It would be a great feature though, I was always frustrated seeing the subs taking a good part of the picture away - just on top of a black bar of 100 pixels. Is it just my problem with the hw accel? Is there a fix?

Using win2k on a gf2mx gainward card.

Greetings,

Dr-Z

P.S:
@Tobias: Keep on the great work!
@Koepi: Keep on the good work, and try to be a little more indulgent with us puny little encoding (and posting!) amateurs :)

did you try a higher desktop-bitdepth (32)?

I got this problem aswell. My video is 480x352, but when looking in MediaPlayer2 properties it says 480x360. During playback I got a black flickering border at the top of the video.

Changing the aspect in SubtitleDS filter from 4:3 to 16:9 (just tried something) gave me the results I was looking for.

I even sent a little bugreport to Tobias, but he has not answered as yet.

It's a known problem under w2k. The quick fix is to disable the "black bars" feature completely by setting the aspect ratio to the fantasy value of 100:3 (suggestion made by Tobias himself)

I hope it's going to be fixed soon, too :)

@hofmetzger:

I was already running 32 bit color depth by default (your idea was a good one though; when I tried 16 bit it only got worse).

@Mentar:

Thx, it's good to know that tobias is aware of the problem. I'll go with that 100:3 solution until it is resolved.

This problem kept me back from adding this feature into dvobsub for months :) Then I sent a test version to somebody who later said it didn't disable hw accel to him, and then I realized that the problem must have been in my config. After a system reinstall everything was alright...
