How to convert mpeg to avi for DVD2SVCD ?

Hi there,

I´ve got an MPEG with 352 x 224, 25fps (avg bitrate 950Kbps) and
Audio 44KHz mono (96Kbps layer II) and would like to create a
SVCD with DVD2SVCD from it. I need an high-quality AVI in SVCD-Format
for this.

I tried VirtualDub to convert this MPEG into AVI, but every Codec I´ve tried results in a very poor quality AVI.

How is it possible to create a SVCD-ready AVI from this MPEG (incl. correct frame dimensions and correct audio-format)?

Don't convert it at all ... this sounds rather VCD-compliant (or somewhat compliant, the audio bitrate is too low and you don't write if it's mpeg1 or mpeg2). An upconversion to a higher resolution and/or bitrate (i.e. SVCD) just does not make sense and won't give you benefits in terms of image quality.
If it's mpeg1, just make sure it's CBR, simply reencode the audio at 224 kbits/sec & burn it as a plain VCD ... some players might even take it as it is (off-standard VCD).

Check out Avisynth.. you can write a script to open up the file, resize it, perform any other operations you like, and then you can feed this file into your converter. For the audio, check out BeSweet from doom9's download section.

To take a source that is of lower quality, then degrade it by encoding it to an avi, then further degrading it again to convert it to an Mpeg-2 stream is just silly.

If you have an apple and want to make it an orange you can paint it, but it's still an apple.
You will not get any of the Mpeg-2 qualities since the source never had them or was already less then what you want as the final result.

Take the mpeg that you have and burn it using Nero's VCD template. Most players will deal with it being a little out of spec. If Nero complains that it is not spec, just shut off compliance and continue.

If you try to convert it from it's current format the video will suffer greatly.
