Why SVCD????

I have aquired a few movies in the SVCD format. They give me all kinds of problems playing. VCD are fine, I would rather all be in divx .avi format since there is never a problem playing those.

Why would you want it in SVCD format? Does anyone else have problems playing it?

I can't play a Divx on my DVD player to watch it on my projector.

If you are making the video solely to watch on your computer, go ahead and use Divx, but I watch mine on my TV.

Svcd's have many more options, selectable Subtitles, selectable multiple audio tracks, chapters, and a much higher bitrate Mpeg-2 encoding all are not available for VCD's. You simply need a good SVCD capable DVD player and you are good to go.

Well, I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

I don't know why anyone would want subtitles....but I guess if you do not speak english it would come into play more often.

I have a number of SVCD's and a pretty good Panasonic DVD player but they do not play. Only on the computer.

I like the divx and don't mind watching on the computer.

However, now that I have DVD to divx down and all my movies converted. I will start to learn DVD2VCD. Or maybe it would be better to concentrate on DVD2SVCD instead. This way I can watch them on my TV also. That would be nice.

I am getting a DVD/VCR combo so it will be nice to be able to record onto VCR tapes to bring up to our cabin where there are no DVD players.

@jeffg30 If you goto www.vcdhelp.com you can look at the long list of dvd players that will play svcd's and all other kinds of information.

Why would any one use subtitles?

Well, you could be living in one of the more than 200 countries in the world in which English is not an official language. But, even if one speaks english, I can imagine of some reasons:

1) You could be living in Michigan, not speak any other language but English, and still be interested in watching a Japanese, Indian, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, German or Cuban movie. The largest film producing country in the world, by the way, is called India, not USA.

2) You could be living in Michigan or in any of the more than 200 other countries in the world and be deaf.

Apart from this, the image quality of SVCD is far superior to VCD, so unless you are blind, you will see the difference.

my friend purchased a Panasonic DVD player against my advise even though I told him Pioneer. He bought it cuz it could also play mp3s...yipee-yai-a. It would only play like 25% SVCDs and sometimes he had to hit fast forward and it would play but he couldn't pause it or anything lest it wouldn't continue on. He kept it for 3 or 4 days and returned it then got an Apex. Then I told him no you fool. He then took that back and got a Pioneer like I originally told him and he said the picture look much better on the Pioneer than the Apex.

India might be the largest producer of movies. But a large amount of crap is still crap. The USA is the only country that produces quality movies (certainly there are exceptions from time to time in Italy and other parts of Europe).

I didn't think about the deaf, that's a good point.

Other then that, if it's not in English, I don't want to see it...

dude, i would think twice about the vcr dvd combo deck you are considering. if you are considering it ONLY for the purpose of "backing up" your dvds. unless you have an apex 600a or some other deck that does not employ macrovision, you will not be able to tape from dvd directly to vhs, unless you plan on getting a mod chip. but, its just not as simple as taping from dvd to vhs, otherwise, i mean, everyone would do it. i can do it on my apex600a (which i happen to be quite pleased with actually), but thats only because some disgruntled engineer put a secret loophole menu in it when he designed the chip allowing the disablement <--is that a word?) of the macrovision signal. wouldnt want you to waste your money on something and then be disappointed. if i am missing something here, i apologize, but thats the way i see it. :D

No, Our VCR broke and we needed a VCR. We have limited space in the ent center we bought so I can take the DVD player I have down there, move it upstairs and have the VCR/DVD combo in it's place. I didn't even think you could tape DVD's.

And for the other guy, no I am not self centered. I just like the kind of movies I like. I don't like artsy movies or documentaries. I like action, comedy, drama....As a matter of fact I find I can't even watch some of the movies I used to like because they are old (pre mid 80's) and the effects and graphics are so lousy compared to now that it is not worth watching.

Did you know that the Magnificiant seven is a remake of a Japanese movie?

Did you know 3 Men and a Baby was a remake of a French movie?

Did you know if it wasn't for help from a German company one of the all time horror clasics Dawn of the Dead would never had been made?

What about Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon?

What about The Full Monty?

What about Bruce Lee, yes he was an american, but he made most of his movies overseas.

What about Jackie Chan? There maybe no more exciting action star.

Most Americans are blind to foreign films unless the big studios grab and endorse them like Crouching Tiger. It's sad, because there are so many fantastic movies made overseas. Every country produces it's share of crap and the US is about at the top of the list. Killer Bimbo's comes to mind or what about the worst movie ever made "Don't be a menace in South Central While Drinking your juice in the Hood".

Anyway this discussion is useless about SVCD's if you get a combo player. Most will not play them anyway.

Never seen the Magnificent 7.....3 men and a baby was alright but only the american version.

I have heard from every person I know that Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was one of the worst movies they have ever seen. I didn't bother watching it.

I hate Bruce Lee and old Karate Movies.

I love Jackie Chan but only the movies he has done in America (ie: Rush Hour 1-2 and Shanghai Noon)

I never said that all American movies are great. However, you have to be in the right frame of mind. You don't go to see Jay and Silent Bob (who are hilarious) if you don't like sarcastic stupid humor. I go into each movie in the right frame of mind knowing what to expect and can enjoy most movies. Esp those stupid humor movies like South Central or clerks or scary movie,etc...

You have to open your mind. But at the same time, some movies you are not going to like no matter what. Killing Fields was the last artsy fartsy movie that I saw that I thought was really good and very powerful. scary that it was real....

Forgot a big one.
Most of Clint Eastwoods early westerns were made in Spain and dubbed into English. Ever wonder why the guy hardly ever speaks. Besides making him more mysterious there is less to dub.

Anyway. This is your opinion and you are entitled to it.

I admit most of my movies come from the US. I generally hate reading subtitles as I am way too lazy and slow.

Just thought of one of the biggest and best type of Foreign film, Anime. Nobody in the U.S has come close to the type of artistic and imaginiative work the Japanese put into these. Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Hunter D are all far and away better then almost anything Hollywood has put out in this format. Sadly many of these are not available in English.

The only clint eastwood I like is any which way you can and those related ones and the dirty harry series.

Even that one western he won the award for was stupid.

My town has a very large Portuguese population and they are just as proud, if not more, to be an American(US) then I am.

Actually my town has many Portuguese, Argentine and Cuban people and to a person I bet you they would say they love it here. Not that there is anything bad about their countries of origin.

This is what I think makes this country great. Many people out side of this country believe everyone here is white and rich. This is just not the case. 12% of this country is black, 4% are asian, somewhere about 13% are Hispanic and another 6% are listed as other. According to the census takers in another 15 years if the rate of growth of "minorities" continues to grow as it is almost 20% of this country will consider themselves hispanic. Among the "white" the countries of origin are just as diverse. Many people from all over Europe and Russia. Nobody originated in this country not even native Americans(migrated from asia thousands of years ago). I don't know of any country that has this much diversity in population in the world.

To say this country is arrogant is just as wrong as saying all Asians are bad drivers, the French are all jerks or all Jews are good at Business. Stereotypes are what is wrong. Predudice based on stereotyping people is the most arrogant thing I know.

I lived a few years over in Japan and remember sitting in the back of the theater on the floor listening and sometimes standing to see Die Hard 3. Japanese don't sell out their theaters so you have to freakin stand up if you don't get a seat. It's in English and subtitles are in Japanese. It was hilarious cuz I'd be the only one laughing out loud cuz the jokes don't translate very well most of the time. That's why they like fruitcakes like Jim Carey cuz they can understand facial expressions and can relate. I like him too btw. I didn't go out to the movies that much cuz it cost like $18 a freakin pop over there.

I remember renting a video over there and taking it back the next day only to tell me I was getting a $5 late fee. I was like what in the hell. They said the kanji was 'same day'. I was told later that some nutballs rent a freakin movie and return it that same night. Oh well everyone is different I suppose.

Thing which sucks is it takes like a year till the movie comes out in Japan. I think LOTR was released last month in Japan. Artificial Intelligence was huge over there cuz they love robots I suppose although many of my friends said it sucked.

I like a few foreign films...like the Chinese movie " King of Masks" http://us.imdb.com/Title?0115669 which to me is about the worth of the human soul. And many others...but obviously to each his own. Believe me if I lived in India I would favor India movies with that weird dancing over any whacko imports. America is not the center of the earth. Live in a foreign country and you'll realize that.

I'm sorry I provoked this discussion by reacting on Jeffg30's remark about the usefulness of subtitles. I think this discussion, however interesting, is out of place here. This is a technical forum and should deal strictly with technical matters. It's not a place for accusing any one of self-centredness, ethnocentrism, narrow-mindedness, hamburgerism, etc., even when absolutely justified.

Anyway, in this specific case it seems to be a complete waste of time.
