There's no one way to do it, really. I know it sucks when people say "read the guides" without just telling you what to do but with all the different opinions you would get, you'd get just as confused anyway. Especially considering a lot of people would be making references to steps and tools that you would require further explanation on since you wouldn't know what they were talking about.

I know it's a total pain in the a$$ since there is a LOT of information here. I was rather overwhelmed when I first started reading. I've learned tons though and it all makes more and more sense everyday. Just take one problem at a time and do a search on it here. The search engine works rather well and has provided me a ton of info. I've learned a lot and incorporate my own ideas as I go. It's a crapload of reading but it won't take you long to catch on. Like I said, there's many different ways of doing things and it doesn't always work the same on every given DVD. You just have to stumble and fall a few times until you get it right. I know my little TDK DVDRW has had the hell burned out of it with me testing things! ;)
