View Full Version : Flat screen plays movies differently?

Hi,

I recently bought a new laptop, a Sony GRX-550. It has a 15in LCD screen, with something called UXGA or something technology.

Now, whenever I watch a movie on this screen, doesn't matter the codec (3.11, 4.xx, 5.01, Xvid, etc...) there are blocks and smears all over the place.

But when I watch them on a regular monitor, there are no blocks or errors.

Does the LCD screen just amplify errors that are there but not apparent on a monitor? Or is it just me?

Anyone else notice this? Doom9, I know you bought a flatscreen monitor recently....see anything like this?

There shouldn't be *that* much of a difference. I get 'stronger' colors but that's about it. Stupid question: Have you double-checked your post-processing levels? And made sure all you drivers are up to date?

Hi,

Yeah, I checked the post-processing levels...it does this on all of them.

Also, it's a brand new laptop, with the latest drivers....checked that too.

BTW, the video card is the ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 (32MB DDRAM) if that helps out someone to help me...

LCD's work fine at their 'native' resolution, anything lower and i SHOULD be shown in a smaller box (with black borders), but most LCD's just upscale the picture (badly) to fill the 15".

15" should be 1024x768, if the app your using to play is changing the screen size, tell it not to, you should get better picture then.

I've never noticed such an effect on my flat panel display.. though I watch movies at the display's native resolution (1280x1024. it's a 17" display).. and I've had it since August 2001 so I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything. Sometimes I get a few horizontal lines in 3d games when I'm firing a gun but I'm usually too busy to really care much. also.. I don't have my display connected via dvi (nvidia cards with dvi output are just too expensive.. I don't really need a full blown gamer card though I might just get a gf4 4200 once they're available).

sticking to the native resolution should be fine, any problems you see *should* be a problem with the clip, altho i only have a CRT to know of any other problems.

I know what you are talking about. It's the the overlay brightness settings. All the overlay settings seem to be a little higher in ATI cards than other brands at default settings. I have the same thing happening. Just turn down the overlay brightness on your ATI and and everything should turn back to normal. If you want it to look exactly like your before, just place your laptop next to a computer with a different video cards and tune it so that the brightness levels match.

My laptop has a ATI mobility. My home pc has a Nvidia Geforce. Overlays is too bright on the ATI in the default setting. Just turn the overlay down.

I had similar problems. Some movies/TV shows looked very bad (=large areas of the same colour where a gradient should have been) on most players (WMP, ZoomPlayer) and very good on others (The Playa :( ).
Switching the desktop colordepth from 16 to 32bit (GeForce 2 MX) helped me.
