View Full Version : Maestro doesn't import all of the subtitles

I am having a problem where Maestro isn't importing all of the subtiltes. All of the time slots are right. The movie I am doing has over 1600 subtitles. Maestro starts importing at 1024. I think it just can't handle that many subs at one time. Does anyone have any ideas (aside from splitting the DVD)? Thanx.

That is pretty strange. I don't know how you're doing your subtitles and everyone seems to have a million different ways of what they happen to think is best. I struggled to get subtitles working correctly in Maestro until I finally settled on this and it's worked everytime for me since...
1) Use SubRip to extract the subtitles. Choose the "Save SubPictures as BMP" option. (I've personally found OCR to be very unreliable.) Under the "Cropping" tab, choose 720x480 with center horizontal alignment and bottom vertical alignment. Under the "Positioning" tab, make sure you choose "keep original position" for both X and Y coordinates.
2) After ripping, choose the output type as "Sonic DVD Creator (*.txt)" and save the text file.
3) Use ScriptConverter (ScriptConvert.exe) to open the text file you just created. Save the output as SON Maestro.
4) (Optional) I usually save myself a bit of time by editing the SON file that is created before importing into Maestro. The following lines control the overlay opacity and the color mapping, respectively...
Contrast(0 0 9 15)
Color (0 0 0 2)
Play around with them and you'll see what I mean. It helps from having to edit every single imported BMP to set the color and opacity levels. With over 1000, I'm sure you'd want to do the same. ;)
Like I mentioned before, everyone seems to have their own ideas about the subtitles and I'm sure many of them are valid. I've just stuck with this method since it's worked for me every time.

Remember looking at the "wall clock" in DVD Maestro. It can give you problems if it's not at 0:00:00:00. If it is the wall clock, you'll notice that the imported subtitles are not at their correct place in time.
Hope this helps.

You can download it by clicking HERE (http://ntphuong.virtualave.net/ScriptConvert.exe).

How big is the corresponding .son file? Mine is 46kb. My .txt file was 64kb. I have something like 600 subtitle bmp files that are all 150kb a piece. Am I doing something wrong. Because after I do all this Maestro says:
NO corresponding subtitles found! THe video asset timecode may not correspod to the timecode specified for the subtitles in the import file.
How big is your guys .son file and .txt file after you use subrip and scriptconvert.

Have you checked the wall clock is 0:00:00:00? (see above). This is the MOST common cause for that message.

Well there is one number on the clock. There are three of them. Nope that didnt work. I set them all up to 0000 all three of them. Im using 2.9 by the way. Dont have the cinmaster codec for preview either. It just says
THe video asset timecode may not correspod to the timecode specified for the subtitles in the import file.
Im my txt document after I use subrip all the timecodes are starting at 50 minutes into it becuase the orignal Ifo had them set there. So my video and audio start at 0000 by my subs at like 50 min into it.

May be you should set your wall clock to -00:50:00:00, or +00:50:00:00 and see what happens ;)

I noticed you made maestro sbt correct? What I guess Im trying to do is written in your Readme file.
If DVD Maestro keeps telling you that "no subtitle events were found", check out your video clip starting time. Sometimes MPEG streams have timestamps embedded in them, so rather than maestro's movie timeline starting at 00:00:00:00, it starts at 01:00:00:00 (or more). This shows up as a timecode offset in the movie timeline. You have two ways to solve this:
1) Reset the timecode offset that was embedded in the video file so it will start at 00:00:00:00 before importing the subtitles.
I THINK this is similiar to what im talking about.
THis is what my ssa script looks like, Its from half way through the vob files:
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
Contrast (15 15 15 0)
Color (0 1 2 0)
SP_NUMBER START END FILE_NAME
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
0001 00:50:47:08 00:50:48:22 FUCK000001.bmp
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
0002 00:50:48:23 00:50:50:03 FUCK000002.bmp
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
0003 00:50:50:04 00:50:54:03 FUCK000003.bmp
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
0004 00:50:54:04 00:50:56:03 FUCK000004.bmp
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
0005 00:50:56:04 00:50:58:05 FUCK000005.bmp
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
0006 00:51:11:10 00:51:13:10 FUCK000006.bmp
Display_Area (0 2 719 479)
0007 00:51:15:20 00:51:20:00 FUCK000007.bmp
ANd I want the times to actually match the ones that are in the video/audio files. This is because of the ifo file isnt it? Because the timestamps are in there?

I guess so. Try another extracting tool, like VobSub (from VobSub configure) just to be sure it's not the fault of the extraction tool you're using.
If you get the same results, either:
1) You'll have to live with that, trying to find out the correct timestamp for the first frame of your movie file, enter it in DVD Maestro's wall clock, and leaving the SSA file as you have it now, with those strange files....
...or...
2) You'll have to find somehow the frame number for the first subtitle and change the SSA script (using Sub Station Alpha) by the corresponding amount of time.
I hope this helps you a little more.

@Octagon
Are you sure that your timecode is set to all zeros in SubRip before you begin and you have a checkmark on "+ TC & Res." ?
Octagon
8th June 2002, 06:59
I'll get back to you on that 2k. Thanks for your help. gonna try that tomarrow.
@TRILIGHT: Dude you mean where it says LAST TIME CODE: 000000
yes all thats set. Its in the middle of the dvd. The vobs that is. Im gonna try that other Ripper. Do you guys not cut dvd vobs in half so that you dont lose any quality? Or is what you guys do is reencode the video using CCE or Tmpeg and then take the whole subtitles and AC3 back together again?
TRILIGHT
8th June 2002, 15:41
I always re-author after compressing with CCE and then integrate the VOB set back into the original file structure. I've always used SubRip and saved as BMP files and have not had a problem yet.

Yeah it figues. Try cutting all your vob's in half and them importing the subtitles and what not.
Also how do I use Vobsub configure I try loading my subs and nothing happens. These are the direct subs I demuxed from the dvd. DO they need to be in a certain format?

I download the "scriptconvertor.exe", but it doesn't work. I think that some files are missing. Is there any other way to download it?

Your download must be corrupt. It's only 1 executable file with no "installation".

I just solved problems with "Script Convertor" and I was able to use it. Now the problem is that subtitles appears at the upper left corner of the picture. I try to change their position using Subrip 1.0 with no results. How can I make them appears centered at the bottom of the picture ?

TRILIGHT

You have to make sure you select everything I listed above in Step 1. Otherwise, their position defaults to the upper left corner.

I got my subtitles working, but they take up the entire screen. The subtitles are on the bottom and the rest of the screen is black. That's how the bitmap fiels are too? How do you fix that? Is that what the contrast is for?
guillep2k
19th June 2002, 18:05
Yes, that's the contrast for. It's assigned in a per palette entry basis.

You have to change your background subtitle color from black to white. In Maestro white is "invisible"... You can do it at subrip or using the color/contrast numbers recomended by "TRILIGHT". You can modify this numbers, opening the ".son" file created with a text editor.

Thank you for posting your method, it is easier than using "OCR" ! Just a simple question, is there any way to change the font size of the subtitles? Font size is too small for small TV's...

You're welcome! :) I've not experimented with changing the font size. Perhaps that's a new challenge to work on. I'm surprised that you say it's small on a small TV. Viewing it on my 35" Sony, they actually appear much larger than the original. I didn't give it much thought though since most of the time, I just turn them on in case I can't understand what someone just said. I will be out of town this weekend but will let you know what I find out on the font size thing.

Thanks, I got it working. My background is black though, I didn't need to make it white.
