AC-3 & PCM to coexist on the same DVD?

Is there anyway to mix VOBs encoded with PCM audio and VOBs encoded with AC-3 audio on the same DVD?

From the look of the tables in IFOedit, I'm guessing you can't mix audio coding modes in the same DVD - but I'm hoping I am wrong.

Yes, you can. It's all in the way you author the DVD. Different programs can have different types of audio, or even more than one audio track. The authoring program you use determines how it is going to mux everything in the final compile to VOB files.

I was thinking along those lines. I had tried to make the PCM audio an alternate audio track. But here is the snag, what ever coding mode I set in the "Aud_1" line of the VTSI_MAT seems to determine the audio mode for the entire disk (see screenshot at: http://www.virgilelliott.com/extras/VTSI_MAT.gif ). If I set this for "AC3" the sound on the VOBs using AC3 work, while the sound on the VOBs using PCM do not. If I set this line to "PCM", the exact opposite happens.

I should mention that I am not using an authoring program to make this disk. The VOBs are all taken from different DVDs, and I am trying to use IFO edit to make a set of ifo files that will allow them to be played. This process has always worked for me when all VOBs use the same audio type.

Hmm... interesting approach. I'm surprise that works for you considering the nature of the IFO files. This may just be personal opinion, but I think you're going about it the hard way. It would probably be easier if you simply stripped the video and audio you wanted and then re-authored the whole thing in a DVD authoring program such as DVD Maestro or Scenarist. You wouldn't have to worry about any of the IFO editing you're having to deal with now and you'd be assured that your final project would work as intended.
