The Gift DVD9 to DVD5

Hi,

I've copied quite a few DVDs now and thought I'd probably met most problems but in trying to copy The Gift, I've come across a new one.

It has 4 VTSs, you can delete VTS_02/03/04 straight away as IfoEdit reports playing Titles 1, 2 and 3 which are all contained in VTS_01 which is 6.2GB in length. The trouble is, there appears to be nothing to strip from it to make it smaller. There is only one (Dolby 6ch) audio stream, two subtitle streams (which save 11MB!). The film is contained in VOB ID 3. There are only two other VOB IDs (1 and 2). If you strip VOB ID 1 you save about 10MB, if you strip VOB ID 2 you save about 160MB but get an illegal navigation error when you try to play the DVD in IfoEdit. I tried resampling the 6.2 GB VOBs at 65% (lower than I'd normally try) in ReMpeg thinking the only reason the files were so large was that it was an extremely high quality video stream and might stand that level of compression. Unfortunately, the resulting quality is very poor. By the way, the film is 1hr46m long.

Can anyone cast any light on what's going on or better still give me advice on how to get round it?

give CCE a try but then the remux process requires a lot more work.

Basically what you are finding out is that Rempeg is a piece of *@#&$ and you need to use much more powerful tools. Check http://www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-cce.htm for a good guide on the method many of us are using to do high-quality dvd9 to dvd5 conversions. Also, many issues/techniques have been discussed in http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=17400 if you still have questions.

Thanks for the info. The CCE method sounds pretty complicated, plus does anyone know where I can get hold of a copy of Scenarist?

Can anyone shed any light on why The Gift is such a large vob set for a 105 minute film and there's nothing to strip out of it?

maybe the bitrate is simply very high.
give us the bitrate : use bitrate viewer or rempeg (no need to go thru the encoding process to get that info).
is it an action movie?
or maybe you are dealing with a superbit movie ?

basically the formula for the size of the video stream is :
avg bitrate (kbits/sec) * length (secs) / 8 = size in kilobytes.

besides, open each vob with vobrator and play every vob id just to make sur there is not some useless extra scenes.

Streetcleaner, do you remember if you used the 'Progressive only' or 'Match source' encoding option in ReMpeg? What percentage did you resample it at?
